Increased my MPG

Just wanted to share my experience using a product I've never used before but read plenty about. My runner was getting pretty crappy mpg since I got it over a year ago. About 15.9 avg. Slowly over last year I changed all fluids, spark plugs/wires, cleaned MAF, throttle body, etc. I wanted my truck to be in its best shape possible at 225k. Well after all the work and new parts I put into it the gas mileage sucked. I've always been skeptical about fuel additives but after researching BG 44K fuel system cleaner I decided to give it a try. Yes, its a bit more expensive than others but it was worth a try. This past weekend I went on a camping trip to Sequoia National Park which was 500 miles round trip. I towed a small utility trailer full of camping gear and the gf with 80lb husky in the Runner. Filled up Friday morning with gas and a can of 44K. Next fill up I averaged 18.5 mpg running at 65-70! Even up the grapevine (SoCal). My truck seemed to run a whole lot smoother too.

I think its safe to say that this product actually worked for me. I will continue to track my mpg to see if its constant.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Was the 15.9 in town or on the highway? Reason I ask, is my ‘99 gets about the same in town and close to 20 on the highway. I thought it was crappy until I learned from another thread here those numbers are pretty good.
 
I'm intrigued (because my mileage sucks so bad), and wouldn't mind giving this a try, but it seems like you are comparing 15.9 mpg hwy/city to 18.5 mpg all hwy. So it's not really apples to apples.

Also I'd be curious how many miles you put on it while measuring the 18.5 mpg, I found a lot of tank to tank variability.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind trying an $18 can if there's a chance that it'll help.

That is true, however I thought having a fully loaded truck plus a small trailer driving up and down long hills would be a good comparison. I will update my mpg once I finish a tank with normal driving.
 
I'm the biggest skeptic of 'snake oil' additives, but I'm completely sold on BG products after witnessing first hand at how well they work. The 44K is good to add to a tank of fuel, but where that chemical REALLY shines is when it's used in the fuel system cleaning service with the fuel rail adapter. The 44K is basically run through the fuel rail from a high pressure cylinder so it cleans out the fuel injectors and combustion chamber.
 
I wonder how much fuel brand and grade make a difference. I have heard Arco is crap, I always use Chevron regular.

Once the cleaner runs through the tank, I suspect your mileage will go down. Often fuel cleaners like these include a high octane fuel additive, which increases the octane of your fuel and increases your mileage per tank. It's like filling with 91 or higher octane, it'll get better mileage until you switch to a lower grade.

But if the cost of the fuel cleaner makes up for the mileage boost, it's worth it. I've dumped in every fuel cleaner imaginable over the years, never saw an increase myself from any of them. What I have seen an increase from has been higher octane fuel, better flowing exhausts, and headers.

I shipped some rusted 3rd Gens to Liberia five years ago. The fuel they use there is 80 octane and I doubt the containers are remotely as clean as they would be in any developed country.
 
This is actually a common misconception. Higher octane does not give you better mileage if the car does not require a higher octane for timing or compression, like the 3.4l.

Thanks for sharing your findings. I have to ask, do you have any data on what your highway MPGS were before this BG 44K? I think you may have able to achieve 18.5 MPG before you added BG 44K based on going 65-70mph. I know my T4R with a lot of added weight can achieve 18.5+ MPG going 65mph on I5 (through the grapevine). Not trying to offend here.
 
Most dealers sell BG products. It is very good stuff. I use their 109 product on my Saturn to keep the oil rings unstuck. Caught the local distributor at the Toyota dealer last time there and I bought the 109 strait off the truck instead of off eBay. He gave me his card to call him and meet him at a stop whenever I need anything. Great guy.

I've kept tabs on just about every time I fill up. Before BK 44K, I was consistently between 15-16 mpg. My gas light would go on after 215 miles with my usual driving habits. I fill up only with Chevron or Shell regular unleaded. I drive almost 20k a year so every mpg counts. Yeah, its no Prius but no one looks cool driving one of those.
