inference or non-interfence motor

I have 1999 4runner SR5 V6 3400 and I am concerned with timing belt needing to be changed. I have 130k of 97% road driving. My mechanic suggest changing the timing belt but I want to push for cost reasons. If the belt breaks am I going to mess up a bunch of other stuff on the motor?

It's always a gamble pushing the timing belt, and yes its a non-interference motor, but the water pump is rated for 100k, so if that goes, your going to have an overheated motor, while most people dont have an issue with this, my buddies water pump went the other day at 145k miles... so your call, pay $700 be set for 100k miles or so, or push it, spend the $700 to change the belt in the near future and potentially have more pressing issues if the pump goes and you drive on it could damage the motor.

i went 170k before I changed my timing belt but I'm not sure if it was ever changed before. I couldn't find the sticker so I'm guessing it wasn't. But traveling any distance made me weary and I bit the bullet and replaced it.

That's one of the great things about these trucks! Our 3.4 V6 motors are NON-interference engines, that means when the timing belt breaks, nothing else gets broken, just the belt. Also I think your belt is due every 90k miles fyi.

When an interference engine breaks a timing belt, like my old 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse Gst (Turbo) the valves and the pistons run into each other a couple of times adding hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars in additional repairs to rebuild the head and/or pistons. :lookout:
These types of engines suck imho, I don't understand why anyone would make a motor this way, except to make you buy another one when it breaks.......
Alot of foreign vehicles are made this way.

Few American engines are this way.
