Info needed on purchase next month!

Ok, this one is on the way into the port at Long Beach soon. Seems like a very nice deal. Profit to dealer from P/L is $367. It has the pull out cargo tray which I was not looking for. What does the collective think? I have X'd out info to protect my contact.

Having been a Systems Analyst, Project/Product Manager, Process Re-Engineer and Change Agent for my entire career, I prefer to call it Customer Needs Assessment rather than Analysis Paralysis, but it's all just nomenclature!!! LOL.

I try not to ask questions just to hear myself type, and really enjoy getting other's real world fedback, but I can admit that there can be too much of a good thing and that I certainly can over analyse things. That being said, again, I really appreciate all the information, opinions and support of a group of like-minded enthusiasts. One of the reasons I bought my last road bike was because of the extensive and extremely, knowledgeable and friendly Owners group online. And sometimes the input just makes me have a good laugh (brtnstrns)!

I believe I have benefited from those who have taken the time to reply to this thread and for reading many of the other threads here. I'm inching closer to my decision - so a heartfelt thanks to all who have responded and to any others who may.

I'm leaning back to my original idea of getting a ORP with KDSS. The family approval factor (even though the kids are in college now) for the on-road handling I felt with the KDSS seems to warrant the extra cost. I may not use some of the CRAWL features very often (like others here), but then again having them and having a vehicle of which less are imported can also be good for resale as others have mentioned - even if I doubt I will ever sell.

It looks like stock in a KDSS ORP in Superwhite here in Southern Ca is gone and I'm told the next one coming into port is 60 days out. I will also consider one in Magnetic grey. If anyone sees a great deal on one I'm willing to fly to make the deal and enjoy driving it home.

Opinions? Critiques? Comments?

I'm interested in the collective's opinion of the pull out cargo tray. I haven't found one at a dealer in my area to see in person. Great idea? Gimmick? Easily removable if not really that useful?

I bought an Off Road (Not Premium) not too long ago. I chose to forgo the KDSS and it hasn't been a problem for me in the slightest. That said, if I was driving on the interstate with a ton of other traffic each day, I may change my decision.

As far as the color goes: You stated that you plan to keep this vehicle for a long time. If the Super White is what you want for color, I would suggest that you hold out and find one with the options you want in Super White. There's no reason to purchase a vehicle in a color that you're not sure about for the sake of a couple of weeks or months. If you really like the dealer you are working with, ask them if they can do dealer transfer for a truck that has all the options you want. Remember, you're going to be looking at this truck every day for the foreseeable future. You need to be happy with how it looks.

This has been discussed lots, and you will not get consensus. Some love it, some hate it.

Cons: - you lose ~3" of storage height, - dirt, etc collects under it, - cost if you don't use it.

Pros: - great diaper changing platform, - great roll out table (fridge, tailgating, target shooting).

If you really hate it, they get exchanged in the classifieds frequently. Not a deal breaker either way.

If you want a Super White with KDSS and no tray here you go. I've gone back and forth on the tray, and decided to forgo it. I've talked to the dealer here waiting for a Mag Gray KDSS.

Fly into Nor Cal and highway 5 back to LA! Lol

I have read the threads I could find about the cargo tray and it appears that with some minor mods for tiedowns it could be a pretty nice option.

My $0.02

Stock suspension is crap, period.
Wishy washy marshmellow crap. I hated it.
Suspension upgrade did wonders, but the most surprising thing was the on-road manners (especially freeway) I gained after installing new UCAs (Total Chaos). Even my dad commented on the stability of the ride after I picked him up at the airport.

Was gonna comment on KDSS, but really.... I don't know crap about it.
So I'll keep my opinions to myself other than to say, search before you buy.

Also.....
Rear locker (definitely), Hood Scoop (Most definitely, with small strategically placed matte vinyl glare killer) and the Black interior plastic instead of the fake "brushed aluminium" interior plastic (I assume you still only get this on OR and PRO?)...

See that's why it's totally subjective.

I like the way the OEM non-KDSS suspension rides. It's wallowy, yes, but this is a tall, top-heavy Toyota 4x4 wagon, not a dang Supra. It drives like every other Toyota 4x4 truck I've owned for the last 15 years. The OEM suspension is super flexy and squishy which is great for off roading.

KDSS rides like the Supra, which is great on fast twisty highways, but is awful on forest service roads, gravel roads, etc. Again, my opinion.

My best advice is to go drive both KDSS and non-KDSS TRD ORs back to back, and drive them hard on multiple surfaces. Don't just carefully tool around the pre-chosen dealer test drive loop around the block. You really need to feel how both systems perform when they are pushed.

For the $5000 difference, you can get a really really nice suspension, and nice wheels.

I would spend that money on an OME BP-51 setup, new UCAs for the additional downtravel, and aluminum skids.

Yes, that's is true, and it's what I did with my FJ62, but that was with 80k miles on it. I don't think I'm going to pay for a new suspension - even the most vanilla stock one - just to rip it out and replace it. I understand I could maybe sell the stock parts, but I don't think that is an option for this brand new vehicle. Thanks for the info though. I'll keep it in mind for down the road a ways!

My wife loved the lack of lean and body roll on the OR we drove
Say no more. Pretty hard to settle for something less when you know there is better out there. If you go non-KDSS, you'll probably regret it.
As for the sliding tray, I personally don't care for it. Didn't get one in the '15 and won't in the '18. The '10 has it and I've used it on occasion. It would come in useful for someone who tailgates football games. Slide it out to sit on and the hatchback keeps the rain off you.

FWIW I was in the same boat as you a few weeks ago, KDSS is hard to find in TX but I knew I wanted to do a lift so I overlooked it. I bought a super white ORP with the OR pkg (blacked out, TRD pro wheels, sliders, etc) and while it’s kind of a money grab on the sticker at ~$3700 I ended up getting the dealer to eat it the cost of it, so it made sense in the deal and it is nice to get a leg up on not having to source those parts.

As for the hood scoop glare I haven’t noticed it at all in the super white color.

I’m coming up on 800 miles and it’s been great. The only thing that slightly bothers me about the stock suspension is the nose dive when braking but a little feathering on the pedal and it can be controlled within reason.

KDSS all day every day.

To the OP, you need to ride in one to see if you like it. KDSS doesn't turn your car into a sports car, but it does makes your body on frame vehicle drive, handle, and feel more like a car than a truck. It is a night and day difference.

In terms of reliability, its a simple system that toyota has been putting them into their land cruisers for years. I fell in love with KDSS way back when my buddy had a lc100, and that thing handled like a dream for a beasty truck. When I found out toyota was offering KDSS in the 4runner, I had to have it.

Only downside I found is installation of a lift can be a huge pain in the rear, and if you ever decide to go long travel, say good buy to KDSS. I've put in a 3 inch lift on my vehicle with no problems

If you find that washboard roads are harsh, airing down your tires well help regardless as to whether or not you have kdss.

I also found out recently that Mclaren uses a similar system to KDSS....I didn't know that.

My 2c. For SoCal, Longo Toyota is huge and will have the most inventory.

KDSS does make a huge difference for on road performance. It does however reduce significantly the clearance under the front skid. I found that stock clearance was really poor and a lift was mandatory. No problems with lift and KDSS.

Rear locker is the only way to go. The CRAWL knobs seem more gimmicky than useful.

Last but not least, look outside of CA if you don’t want KDSS. Look at Vegas or Phoenix for example. Just find the zip and enter into Toyota web site to look for your vehicle.

Have 16 TE Prem stock w/factory installed running boards, for a year. Like the prem due to easier to clean the seats. For the pull out cargo tray. You may love or hate it. Do not have it, but due to getting small dog and some light overlanding, making my own set up in the back including slide out tray. For trails that I use have only had some light scraping on underside. Did bend up the back of one of the running boards about an inch. Have never used anything more then 4L. But nice to have the rear locker just in case. Have not been in mud yet. I am 5'10" and no issue with the hood. But you better make sure of which direction you travel daily because if the sun hit the back of the hood scoop it will blind you. You can always put a wrap on the scoop. Have seen some nice set up SRs. If I still needed a 3rd seat would have gotten the SR without hesitation. Now I am trying to figure out what need. Know that need to do something about load so will at least put airbags on it.
