Info on 0w-30 vs 5w-30 Oil

Which 30 Weight Oil Do I Use, 0W-30, 5W-30 or 10W-30

AMSOIL 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 synthetic motor oils are ALL 30 weight oils. The answer is that ANY one can be used regardless if your vehicle owners manual says to use, for example, a 5W-30. "W" means winter. In winter weather the 0W oil will flow like a 0W oil, and the 5W will flow like a 5W oil and a 10W will flow like a 10W oil just until the engine warms up. In order to understand the differences one has to first understand that the numerical values given to these various weight oils are strictly empirical numbers. For example, 0W does not mean that the oil has no weight. That is one of the reasons why we say it is strictly an empirical number.

Just being a wise ass:cannon: That's good info. I use 5w-20 per the TSB that applies to the 4gens. Just to open it up and get people talking I'll throw out this IMHO... It seems to me that an ideal oil would be the old Castrol 5w-50 or a 0w-40. IMHO we don't have those because the bigger the spread the shorter the performance life of the oil (I'm talking viscosity only). I have noticed that a 10w30 seemingly holds up better than a 5w30 especially in the summer when it's hot. A straight 30 seems to do best in the summer months as it contains little or no viscosity modifier.

I'm thinking even 0W-20

Page 2 of the TSB says this:

DO NOT use these oils in engines other than those listed above. These low–viscosity oils cannot maintain lubrication effectiveness in engines with older designs and could result in smoke emissions from the tailpipe and/or unusual engine noise.

Sounds like they don't recommend 0W-20 except for specific engines.

FWIW, I took an automotive class a few years back taught by master toyota tech. I can't remember their exact ranking system, but it was something close. He had a friend with an 07 or 08 camry, and they decided to put the 0w stuff in there instead of the recommended oil, and he said that mpg's went WAY down. Like 9 down.

I'll try the 5w-20 this change and see if I get better performance.

Hard to know what to believe?

May be a dead post but for anyone who lands here the oil recommendation to believe depends on the engine one owns.
