Initial start being stubborn 3.0

I've searched 'cold start problems' on the forum, but to refine what it's doing. The usual 'first' start would take 3 times trying to start for it to start, today i had to hit the gas on the 3rd time. It idles properly meaning it goes up to about 1100 when first started and idles down to 900ish after a few. And it will start right back up once it's started.

So, does this sound like the cold start injector? Or should i look elsewhere? TPS? I have the old engine still so i can try swapping whatever is suggested, if it's still on the engine.

Thanks for any advice, she purrs like a kitten once started, just wanted to ask the experienced T4R's.

^^^ Agreed. I would start there. If nothing is wrong there then my next guess is the check valve in the fuel sending unit is going bad.

Good luck

Thanks gents, i did some reading up on the cold start injector time switch. I'll check the cold start injector first thing, for sure, and i'll also open the new repair manual.

Follow up for the chance of helping others, very first thing i did was remove the cold start injector to inspect it & it was heavily coated with soot. A good cleaning w/ some throttle body & carb cleaner and a few sprays inside the hole. Hooked it back up and viola, started right up. Thanks again for your help guys.

So the 4R has still been a little difficult with it's initial start, but running smooth after the fact. I checked the resistance on an old cold start injector, then the one in the truck, the same w/ the cold start injector time switch, which led me to finding a broken TVV OR BVSV ( as it's called in the diagram under the hood ) the names on ebay were vacuum valve switch or bimetallic valve. Anyway it was broken and floating w/ 1 vacuum hose going to the canister, and i've been wondering why there was a vaccum male end on the top by the throttle body, all the diagrams i found show THAT being hooked to the BOTTOM of the two male vacuum plugs on the BVSV. Which the hose has been non existing.

I ordered one on ebay today, after all the local auto part stores said they can't get it. Hopefully .....this has had something to do with what seems like the missing fuel needed for the initial start. If i've read correctly, there's a 2ndary check valve in the canister, 'possibly' allowing or preventing the #1 check valve to do it's job by keeping fuel at the ready ???!!! I have no idea, but that's what i'm hoping.

For anyone never seeing one before, it has a brass threaded bottom that screws in right beside the cold start injector timer switch and has 2 male vacuum ends on the plastic top part.

Bottom line, i'm really hoping it's not the check valve in the fuel pump/gas tank. :noidea:
