Inner Fender Adjustment

To many of you, this will be old news. The problem was that I installed Michelin LTX M/X2 285/70/17's a few months ago. All was well, the vehicle handled much better etc. and the tires fit fine. Then, per information gained from this forum I had the caster adjusted to the 4.0 plus mark and that is when the problem started. The steering was much better. The vehicle drove they way most others do, with at least a little Resistance in the steering.

However, I got some pretty good rubbing when I made a sharp right or left hand turn in reverse. Both tires were just a little to close to the plastic inner wheel well fender during those turns. I was not willing to give up the better steering by re-adjusting the caster back.

I could have purchased spacers and lifted the front end, or the Bilstien shock route. Both cost more money then I really wanted to spend for such a small problem

I then discovered a solution that might be helpful to others now or in the future. There are two screws (out of about 5 or 6) which hold the inner wheel well fender to the frame work. 2 of the screws, located at the bottom of the inner fender, closest to the left or right end, have enough play to actually adjust the inner wheel well fender forward about 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Loosen the screws, push the inner fender forward towards the front of the vehicle, hold the fender forward while tightening those screws again. The fenders stay in the new position. That little bit of adjustment was enough to stop the rubbing and saved a bit of cash to boot.

Stay safe.
