inside Door handle will not open door

the rear drivers side in my 2003 limited will not open unless I unlock the door with the power locks. if my son manually unlocks the lock the door will not open. i have to use the power unlock so he can open the door from the inside.


I was wondering if anyone knows about what underneath the door handle bezel. I would like to try and fix the door but also dont want to take it apart and realize I am over my head.

Try to wiggle the child safety lock back and forth several times even if it's already in the "open" position. In my 4Runner, it was sticking the day after I took delivery of the truck.
 
I wouldn't be so sure it's the child-lock. I've had this happen a couple of times on the rear passenger's side door. The first thing I checked was the child-lock and it was in the position to allow the door to open from the inside. At first I thought my passengers weren't pulling it hard enough (elderly person and child) but I sat back there once and couldn't get it open. Usually unlocking through the power locks will set it free.

It hasn't happened in a while and I haven't had any other problems with the lock going bad.

Its not the child lock. I should have mentioned that in my first post. At some point before i owned the truck the drivers side rear window was broken (its the only window without the VIN in it. Perhap a popalock guy messed up the lock.

What happens is you get in and the truck auto locks the doors. drive somewhere. When my son attempts to get out the handle pull and the lock on the handle looks like it misses a 'catch' and moves the lock 'knob' about 75% of the way motion and a person can not open the door. if I lock the doors and then unlock he is able to open the door.

Then I hear "i had this door".

Inside the door there are two cables attached to the door handle on the other side. These cables go down inside the door to the auto lock/ unlock box. Both of these cables have plastic pieces at each end which break fairly easily and if broken change the cable length so it will no longer operate correctly with the inside handle. It sounds like whoever worked on the window broke one or both of those plastic pieces.
The cables are $14.00 at the dealers each. It took me about 3 hours to repair mine (mostly because I didn't know how to take it apart). I can explain what to do if you are interested and have the tools.
 
I have the same problem with my 2005. I am 99% sure the tint shop broke something inside the door.

Passenger rear door will not open from the inside. Child lock has been factored out as likely cause.

I want to fix this tonight, drmorbius do you have any tips? I will see if the dealership has those cables in stock.
 
Just fixed my non-functioning interior rear passenger door handle.
extremely easy.
i found this thread, which helped me find the second screw that stumped me for the first half of the project:

As previously stated, there are two cables attached to the handle/lock mechanism. They look exactly like bicycle brake cables.
The one with the green bracket (this is how it attaches to the door skin/door panel. keeps the cable sleeve in place so the cable can function properly) was not connected at all. Simply place the end of the cable back in it's proper place, and make sure the "bracket" piece is held in place as it should be.
