Inside the rear lift gate - Pics

I had to open the inside of the rear lift gate a while back for a repair (my fault), I figured I would post the pics I snapped while I had it open. The forum can never have too much info, hopefully someone can find these useful....

I did not replace the speakers, just needed to remove one to access a bolt. After seeing these I have a feeling I will be swapping them out sometime in the near future though. Obviously the stock non JBL system.

I can crop/zoom if anyone wants closer pics of something else, just let me know!

Thanks for posting these. How easy was it to remove the shell?

Do the speakers have proprietary wiring hookups?

I assume the box in the middle is the Party Mode "amplifier"?

May have to dynamat that thing and put some better speakers in!

I held back talking about this because I would most certainly get flamed for not having pics....but.

I switched out all my speakers, except woofer, with JL Audio C2's. Fit perfectly when placed into the stock frames. You will have to cut the stock connectors off but that's normal. Also, Infinity's were too wide at the base, found that out too, front 3.5" ones.

Sounds great, got better highs and mids, good compromise to complete system replacement.

Thanks for posting these. How easy was it to remove the shell?

That was my biggest fear. If you look around the edges, I believe on the passenger side, you will see a place to insert a tool to pop start the removal. I used a very wide screwdriver and a towel under the shank as not to scratch the paint. Put pressure and pop went the 1st one. I then kept pressure and followed along and they all popped off without a problem. You can see the two quick disconnects hanging in the 1st pic, those are the ones that go to each of the rear lift gate lights, they do not give you a ton of slack, and these must be disconnected before the piece can come off. The piece actually 'hooks over' where the rear window drops down, use that to your advantage and leave that hooked, keep one hand on the piece to keep pressure off of it, reach up and disconnect the connections (one on either side), then just 'unhook' the piece from the where the window drops. Obviously this was all done with the window up, or the window would be down inside the gate and in the way of what I needed to do. I did it with one person, if you have two people it will be easier.

Did you make use of the separate crossover that comes with the C2s? Or does the 4runner already have one that you left in place and you just wired the new speakers in?

The C2's don't have crossovers, I think those are the C5's.

The C2's are perfect high efficiency speakers.

According to the repair manual that box is the Multiplex Network Door ECU. Gee, even doors have their own ECU these days.

What size were the speakers in the front and side doors and what did you replace them with?

Did you replace tweeters in the front dash or not since you don't have JBL?
