install help

Hey All,

I'm in the middle of installing my stereo in my 99 SR5 and the door panels are giving me a headache. :bonk:

Has anyone ever installed JL 6.5's in the front doors? For some reason one of the pop in plastic guys at the front of the door (nearest the hinge) wont stay in. The rest of the panel is in place and for the life of me I can't find anything interfering. I've trimmed some of the plastic on the inside of the panel which looks like it is close to speaker but no help.
If anyone has exprience with JL (VR650-Csi) any help would be greatly appreciated. When I checked on Crutchfield and other car audio sites they said these speakers would fit. :help:

I'm also looking for step by step instructions on changing the head unit if anyone knows where one is. My buddy just had a hell of a time with his 96 Taco.

thats exactly what i had in my 98. JL makes great stuff. there are a couple of things to get the doors off, so bare with me its been a while.

when you open your door there is a push pin on the side push it in and it unlocks

you need to pull the arm rest cover off and unscrew those screws

and then four plastic pins in the bottom of the door

i think there is one more pop pin right below the tweeter

the screw in the middle of the door handle

pop all that and once you get the doo loose you need to push the door handle toward the steering wheel and it will pop the guide it throught the hole.

then just unplug the electric stuff from the windows and slap those badass speakers in there

Thanks for the reply but the speakers are already in the door. The problem I am having with both front doors is when I have put it all back together, there is one plastic pop pin (nearest the hinge) that when I pop it in, it pops back out. I check to make sure everything is in place, I pop it back in, it pops back out. This continues until I start yell and run around the yard. :dammit:


Did you have to shave anything down on the inside of your door panel to get a good fit?

I think i know what you're talking about...the little circular plastic pin that holds down the panel near the hinges. To put it back in... first, have the center 'dagger' lookin thing poppin out from the back. Then just push it in from there. Hopefully i'm talkin about the same thing as you and you understand my instructions. If not...i can post up a picture.

Thanks for your reply as well but I know which one you are talking about and that's not what I am refering to.

On the lower half of the door panel, on the inside there are 8-9 plastic pop-in pins (1 or 2 along the vertical edges and the rest along the bottom edge of the panel).

When everything is in place, the top of the panel is sitting nicely in the window channel, the inside door handle is back in place, the 2 screws behind the arm rest are installed...everything looks good...then......
I go to press in all these plastic pins, and no matter what side I start at, when I pop the last pin in place, the one nearest the hinge jumps out of its hole in the door.
It's like something on the inside is sticking out too far and not allowing the panel to sit flush against the door. I have trimmed away anything I can see that might be interfering but it has not helped.

I'm on the verge of just living with it as obviously the door is closed 98% of the time and when it is open there is only small gap between the panel and the door, but it's one of those little things that drive ya nuts...
