Installation of Front and Rear Valances (Costs)

Yup. I couldn't see a way to do the rear without removing the whole cover. Looks scary, but there are no wires, just a bunch of fasteners.

I am leaning towards doing it myself. I have a great body mechanic who I just took it to. He said for him to make a little money it would be $70. MUCH better than toyota at $250.

He also gave me 'the look' and showed me all the bolts that needed to be removed and how it popped out on the left and right sides. He said you REALLY can do this yourself. Its easy.

I've done the front and it was easy. Hardest part was removing the bumper so I could dremel the needed slots (SR5). Since you have a TE, all you gota do is reach the clips and then switch out the garnish pieces.
As for install pricing, I think $125-$140/hr is standard hourly for Toyota tech install (varies by dealer/state). I'm installing the rear bumper garnish/valance this weekend and paying my dealer to switch out the rear hatch handle panel next week for the TE/TRDP one (black).

I would argue, if you don't take off the bumper, the hardest part is reaching the clips on the 3 rows. I have the scratches on my arm to prove it! :baby: LOL

Haha, I bet! I had to remove to cut the slots into the bumper. I have seen several TE guys on here that have done it your way, and all of them said the same thing about scratching up their arms trying to get the last few clips lol.

I think I'm going to Plastidip my TE front valance black after I scratched the shit out of it on a rock this past weekend while off-roading. Ugh. Unfortunately, it's a $190 piece of plastic, so cheap replacement doesn't seem to be an option.

Just finished the rear valance tonight. As advertised a ton of screws and clips to be removed and no wiring. Hard part was to detach the bumper and snapping it back on where it meets the tail lights.

In short I had some fun and probably saved 500 plus bucks in installation.

OR ... I could have just stayed with silver, but what fun would that have been? :0

Guess I will just keep coming here so you guys can convince/taunt me to do it on my own.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. I have used search, gone about 12 pages deep however can't seem to find a clear how to or reference on the removal of the rear bumper (TEP). I am going to remove the front and rear valance so they can be painted by a shop. Found a shop to do both for $120 black or matte black. TRD OEM black ones would be just a tad below $300 for front and back.

Instructions all over for what seems a pretty straight forward clip removal for the front. Rear however there seems to be no real how to for the rear. I was curious how many bolts need to be removed, are any hidden as in do I need to remove taillights etc? I have seen the suggestions to lay out a blanket so as no to scratch the bumper but nothing as to remove this, this, this. Have read it took about 35 minutes to remove. Kind of seems extensive for a few bolts.

Any help or if I missed a thread please feel free to point me in the right direction.

You should be able to find some links to the factory service manual (FSM) on the forum. There is a 5 page section 3377-3382 IIRC ( I was looking at this last night for you but got pulled away) that details how to remove it. However you approach with a "can do" mentality with a small set of tools and ~35min or less you wont have any problems figuring out how to get it off. (the rear lights do not need to come out) IIRC from when I removed it there are a couple flat pieces that come out separately from the bumper that are bolted to the fender well and the bumper then everything else is bolts holding the bumper. Start with the bolts inside the rear door near the latch and along that edge. If you need I may be able to post up that section later today or tomorrow but its nice to have the FSM so I would strongly recommend finding a download link for it.

On a side note, If you want matte black I would just plastidip (7-8$ a can) vs. paying 120 for them to be painted. I did this with both the front and rear and it has held up well. The front I ended up redoing as I didn't do enough coats the 1st time and I will do the same for the rear one of these days. Its also removable if you ever want to go back to silver

I scoured the forum and found where one description was given however from my precursory look at my rear bumper I didn't see where any push pins were located. I am guessing from reading and your comments it is basically remove the bolts that are visible on the rear deck, remove the bumper mud guards, pop the rear sides to get clips/claws that friction hold and it should come off? Thanks for the lights comment, I was hoping I wouldn't have to pop those off. If this is correct it doesn't sound too hard.

I am going to install a 30 inch LED light bar in the front, have read up on Saker's install. I figure between the amp install, Antman's DRL, 12V constant, Rear Cam and Nav mod I will have the car pretty torn up. Can't hurt to have the paint since everything is torn up as I am not a fan of plasti-dip here in CO. Winter we get so much gravel it tears our paint apart let alone dip.

I downloaded Nashman's zip files to the FSM but for some reason I can't get the htm doc working. Will have to play with that later.

Installing bumper valances

Just installed the front valance today. Watched a quick YouTube video on removing front bumper. That portion took 10 mins. Once that's off, disconnect the wire to fog lamps and you're ready to go to work. When you have the bumpers off the inside is actually premarked to let you know where to cut. Go at it with the dremel tool. You may find the need to work with the valance to wiggle it into place. Keep in mind that the cuts will be covered if that worries you. The clips slide right into place to secure to the inside of the bumper. Years ago I installed the rear wing on my Subaru Crosstrek and that was WAY more intimidating as you are drilling holes into your roof. As long as you have tools and a work space I'd recommend doing this job yourself vs having to pay probably $100 or more for someone else to do. My power tool broke mid job and I had to finish using a metal file and still wasn't a bad job. Don't be intimidated by it. Save that money for the next upgrade. Good luck!

Do the valances make enough good contact points with the bumper to be mounted using 3M double stick tape, and modifying the valances instead by cutting off the mounting tables that would normally go through the bumper ? I don't have a problem cutting, just wondering if there's another option to mounting, thanks

No, I haven't seen/heard anyone on here do it that way. The valance piece is hollow, and has male pieces that have to be anchored on the backside or the bumper with the mentioned clips in order to secure valance in place.

I highly doubt that would be physically possible because the valances are so thin. The material is less than 1/4" thick.
