Installed a rear view camera...

Hey guys. I installed a rear view camera to go along with my Kenwood 8019 and am finally getting around to posting the pics.

I got two rear view cameras off Ebay. It turns out they are for a Nissan. Go figure - on my Yota! Anyway, I was going to incorporate both but have decided to only use one. I didn't want to put it under the bumper or in the spoiler, etc. And for whatever reason, I've never seen anyone else put one in the factory location. So that's exactly what I did.


In this picture you'll see the rear door / hatch with the trim piece removed. The red rectangle is where I cut the hole and mounted it.

Here's a pic of it installed (sorry, I forgot to take a pic of just the hole).

I had to notch the trim piece for it to fit well. This definitely could have turned out better. I think I got into too much of a hurry. Anyway, I used RTV to help seal the hole that I made for the camera to mount to the skin.

I'm not sure why you decided to put a hole in your sheetmetal... most guys use an adjustible mounting bracked with some double-sided tape to mount it in the same location you chose. Notching out the plastic trim piece is necessary, much like the factory backup camera.

Do a search for Zoso's back-up camera installation to see another member who used the same location.

drmorbius - Thanks! & You got it, last thing I want is to come out and have just the wiring to my camera there, whether stolen or by simply falling off...

Double sided tape? I guess I hadn't even considered it. I just don't think of it as a great way to secure a rear view camera. Kinda like my feelings towards crimping & soldering - I always solder! The way I did it is a much more secure & permanent mounting. It's not going to fall off if it gets wet, or get's bumped around a bit on a crappy road. Double-sided tape may work great for others, but I know if I had done that, it would already be gone.
I'm happy with the way I did it, and the way it turned out. That's what matters most, right? I think the hardest part of it all was running the wiring through the door. That was a total PITA! LOL.


After you mentioned it, I did try to search for zoso's install, but it didn't return anything for me. I thought it was rather odd that I hadn't seen anyone else put the camera there, considering that's where the OEM one is. If you have any links, that would be great.
Anyways, I just wanted to show others a way of mounting the rear view camera.

So how did you get the camera wire through the door?...I mean how did you thread it into the door from the outside? I just had my door apart and could not for the life of me figure out how to thread it. I tried following the license plate light, but I could not get it to run.

I can't see your pics, but did you totally remove the license plate garnish?

Wow! This post rose from the dead! LOL...
I had to snake the wire around the window track, to the upper left corner of the door (looking forward), and ran it through the rubber accordion tubing that the other wires are ran through.

To see the pics, you may have to use Mozilla FireFox. For some reason, when the board was updated, all the old pics turned into red "x"es if you use IE. Anyway, I don't have a pic of it in use, but I'll see if I can post a pic tonight. I did have to completely remove the garnish. When you do this, you have to unplug the door opener button, so don't close the door while working or you'll have to re-plug it in each time you want to open the door. I just put a rag over the catch to keep it from latching.

The camera has clips on both sides to keep it secure, however, I chose to put RTV around it to keep water from leaking into the door (not like it doesn't get in from the window seal, but that's beside the point).

I bought two of these cameras and only wound up using one. I was going to use the other for a front view, but the image would be reversed. So may go up for sale if I can find it.

Thank you VERY MUCH for dealing with this blast from the past for me!! I can see the pics now and can see what you did.

I appreciate your help and explanation!! I was stuck with how to run the camera cable through the door from outside to inside, but seeing how you did it helps a lot.

got any pics of the back up view on your screen?

Ok, I finally thought of getting a pic of the camera when backing up. However, one thing I like about the W505 is you can select the camera view even when in motion.

Here's another that doesn't have a reflection of my hand, arm, leg whatever...

I believe these are in motion too. Quite thrilling I know! It would be much better for the viewer if there was a cop car with it's lights on or something (not for me of course)!

It is pretty cool having that option. I have a Pioneer that will do the same... it's pretty useful when you're towing something or if you just want to watch the back when you plow through a huge puddle.

The Pioneer will also split screen between your GPS and backup camera so you can track both at the same time. It's pretty cool... can give you motion sickness if you're prone to that sort of thing.

So do all of the newer Pio's do the split screen? I think if I were to get one it would be the Z120BT.

I have the Z120. From what I've heard the Z120 and X920 are the the same OS just different physically. Z120 has a little larger screen and flip down face. So my guess is the X920 and others would be able to do the split screen.

Hey RevoRunner... I just ordered the Z120BT and was wondering how flush/ low profile it sits in the dash. Since these don't have a removable faceplate, I don't want it to atract too much attention.

BTW the split screen is way cool... Now I think I'll have to spend more money on a Mod.
