Installed CB Radio/Antenna

I have to say, I blame this purchase 110% on snowrunner! snowrunner's post made me want one and before I could convince myself otherwise I bought one! The install was pretty easy, it took about 3 hours from start to finish but that also included spending 2 hours wiring the damn thing, I was having trouble with the accessory fuse but I eventually got it all working good. My only complaint is the bulky microphone, I'll probably end up replacing it soon. Thanks for making me spend all this money snowrunner! :bigok: j/k

I mounted the antenna on the back because I think it looks better then if I were to mount it up front and also because I was worried about being distracted by a big flailing antenna in front of me while driving. The radio is a Cobra 18 WX ST II and the antenna is a 4' Firestik. Also, I have since painted the bracket, sanded, painted, sanded, painted again several times to hold up better, in the pics the paint is chipping off.

Temporary Mic location until I decide where I wanna mount the mount.

Nope, not yet... Haven't hooked up the coax cable yet. Can't wait to though! When I do I'll let ya know aprx. what it is.

looks nice, just unplug the Mic. and put it in the glovebox when not in use, you will never know the CB is there :bigok:
if ya wanted, ya could even find a black cap to fit the screw on the face of the CB :bigok:

Yeah I thought about that, I figure the only time I'll be using it is on longer road trips! And I really like where you mounted yours on your 99, I'm considering going the same route. BTW I think we have the same Satellite Radio!


Snowrunner, thanks! :bigok: I like the location of that microphone but I think I'm going to mount it directly to the right of the steering wheel, it'll be really close to my hand that way. :

Thank you! I like where it's mounted too, I really didn't want a big bulky CB mounted on the dash or something, I think it looks kinda cruddy but this one fit the bill perfect! If your serious about getting one talk to shootmymime, he might be able to hook you up. The smarty bought two on ebay by accident, :bigok:

for those that go wheeling, even if its just a few times a year, a CB is soooooo worth it, its not only a safety device, as your able to comunicate with the others in the group, but if the group needs to pull over, letting a few atvs, bikers or hikers by.
Its also great just driving around town, when you come up to a traffic jam, get on ch. 19, the truckers will know what lane is open, as well as knowing where any police are, not that Im telling you to speed and in bigger cities, most police cars monitor CBs, (ch.9) ch.9 is for emergencies,
a CB is just so useful, :bigok:

i have always wanted one for the heck of it and think it would be cool to have it even though i really dont wheel anywhere (the little i do) that i dont have a buddy or cell service.

Yea the popo warning and the traffic info via the truckers was the biggest reason I got it, I'm excited to get out on the road and use it! Would you mind sharing what some of the common channels are used for? I know that 4 is the "off road" channel, 9 is the emergency channel, and 19 is the trucker channel. Any others I should know? The coax is wired into the CB from the antenna.

I got out of CBing just after the switch to 40 channels. lol Back then they had units with the brains that could be mounted under your seat with a larger mic that could control the channels and volume. Do they still make those?

the antenna gets pluged into the back of the CB..
they only get a few mile range, but good enough in most cases..

Would you mind sharing what some of the common channels are used for? I know that 4 is the "off road" channel, 9 is the emergency channel, and 19 is the trucker channel. Any others I should know? Thanks, Jordan

well basicly:
ch.4=off-roading
ch.9= emergency (most police monitor this)
ch.16= spanish
ch.19= truckers channel
sometimes off-roading groups use ch. 7
thats the very basic that i know of and the common 10 code:
10-4 ok or message recived
10-20 location, whats your loc. or my 20 is ________

Thanks ric, I'm worried the truckers are gonna make fun of me for not knowing my lingo, lol I'm anxious to see how it goes. Snowrunner, everything I have read online says do not refer to anyone as good buddy as it is interpreted as more then a buddy, lol

naw, most of them are cool, just turn the radio on, and listen to them, you will pick it up fast..

Have any of you ever used a handheld CB? I was thinking about getting one of those for the meantime. ($25 right now on C.L.) Then later when I have time and money to do an in-dash one (I would have to get a new stereo too, so that means more $$), I can loan the handheld to a friend when on the trail. I figure the handheld would have at least enough range to communicate on the trails. That way no matter who I go with, I can use the CB.
