Installed Motorola Handsfree Kit

Well after reading some pretty bad reviews of the Alpine BT-100 Bluetooth hands free kit and waiting for just the right device, I chose the Motorola T605. I wanted something that would tie into the telephone mute lead of my Alpine IVA-W200 as well as mount pretty much be out of the way. Being able to hear the person on the other end was also important. The old ears are not what they used to be. I did not really have any need to integrate the audio through my Alpine head unit. That is another reason I chose the T605. It has an external speaker. Below are some pics of the install.

I am using an AT&T Blackberry Curve 8310 and am able to take advantage of the voice dialing function of the BlackBerry. I have made several calls on it so far the quality is very good. The external speaker is very loud (being right in the console) and the volume can be adjusted. The mic also picks up very well. The people I was talking to did not believe I was on a hands free kit.

Overall I am happy with the kit. It is reasonably priced and it is very easy to install

that looks great. What is that material you got to cover the speaker holes? That location does not look as deep as my 4runner (2004). Is it because of the speaker? or is that a change in model years? Where your speaker sits with the holes drill in mine goes at least 2.5 inches deep.

I do not think that the 2004 and 2007 consoles are different. The material that covers the MDF speaker grill is simple black grill cloth. The Motorola speaker is attached to the MDF. The External speaker is only about 2.5 inches deep.

Looks nice, but one question: The control unit looks to be almost the perfect size to fit into one of the switch blanks right behind the shifter. Did you ever think about trying to mount in there? You'd be able to press the buttons without leaning forward to reach it....

Oh yeah I thought about it. But it is not near the size of of the blanks. about 1/4 inch wider and 1/2 inch longer

The way the wire attaches to the controller and the huge plug that connects to the kit's black box makes it not really install friendly. It is not easy to hide the wire.

Very very clean install. IMO, it rivals factory BT with navigation.

not to thread jack, but if people are looking at those b/t kits, PARROT makes a few good units ive gotten to put in customers cars. What i like is that they go through the cars existing speakers, not adding new ones.
Whats really cool, is that metra is making harnesses for the parrot kits so they just go right inline, it really does plug and play

Gordy, did you use the mute wire on the motorolla to mute the radio while your on a call?
Ive seen a few of the motorolla units have the mute wire switched with some other wire on the brain...its been a hassle for me before.

Good call and good point. I really would have preferred a Parrot kit. Down side is it has a larger box and getting one with an external speaker was not an easy option.

Since I am running an aftermarket head unit, using the factory speaker harness or speakers was not an option. There is not a single OEM speaker left in the truck. This is why I needed an external speaker. The Motorola T605 also integrates into the OEM speakers but only covers one speaker. The Parrot covers them all. This enables me to keep the kit in the truck when I sell it.

Gordy, did the 605 kit include the external speaker? I can't find very much information on this unit, but it does appear to at least include the external microphone according to the Motorola press release. Any links to install documentation on it? I couldn't find anything on Motorola's site or anywhere else on the web.

I was thinking of putting a Parrot clip on unit in the wife's vehicle, but I think a visor mounted unit might start to feel a bit claustrophobic. The T605 with remote mic/speaker placement looks like exactly what I'd like to get if it can be used without tapping into the vehicle's headunit.

The Motorola T605 comes with the mic, external speaker and brain and of course the wiring harness.

What is strange is that there is no documentation on Motorola

There are audio integration kits for the Motorola carkits, too.

Peripheral Electronic's line of Celfi adapters, as well as the Drive&Talk harnesses from nicestuffonline.com . These can plug into the harnesses of the IHF1000 or the T605 to allow muting of the radio and call audio through the vehicle's speakers in compatible cars.

The harnesses make for a nice, clean installation on the wiring end, too.
