Installed Tranny Cooler/Fan Combo (& Revos)!

SORRY FOR THE HUGE PIX - THERE'S NO SIZING ON THIS FORUM!

Just installed this Hayden 526 combo stacked plate cooler & fan ($155). Initially it it seems to be keeping temps down about 20 degrees without using the fan. It was around 105 outside yesterday, and it kept the tranny pan temps about 180. This is with no trailer load, and level ground. The fan made a good difference when I was stopped in traffic.

While these temps may seem a little high, in all my investigation with Toyota, dealers, and Toyota owners, it appears Toyota tranny temps just run a little higher. I don't know if this is because of the synthetic fluid & they can run a little higher or what!?

In any case, the cooler & fan is in, and I'm not going to worry about it any more. I've done what I can. I'll still change the fluid on a more accelerated schedule, as the book recommends when towing.

QUESTION: Does it make any difference if the stacked-plate cooler is mounted horizontally or vertically? This cooler & it's brackets has it mounted with the plates running vertically - my factory one had the plates horizontal. I don't think the installation brochure talked much about specific position, other than air flow - and I have now lost the paperwork!

BTW - Yes, I did have to move the horns to the other side, via drilling one new hole. Just had to be sure there were good grounds, using star washers to bite into the brackets & body for a good connection - works very well, and seems louder for some reason.

If the temps on the gauge stay as high as they are in the hot Phoenix summers (108 currenty), I may add the stock cooler back in series when I get the BIG trailer this month (hopefully)!

just the fan

i wonder if i installed just the electric fan and used that a lot to keep the engine cool, would that be enough to keep the fan cllutch on the motor comming on. cause when it does what a drag o the engine. it seams to come on when i am trying to merge into traffic.

thanks

AN UPDATE ON THIS:

I found that I had a grounding issue with the gauge, and since I've corrected that, the tranny temperature readings seem to be lower by about 20 degrees! Stay tuned, as I'll have to see how it runs on my over the raod trips next week.

This is way good news as it seems the tranny is running in a more acceptable range - if my current somewhat unsubstantiated readings hold up.

This cooler rocks! I am staying well below 185 going up good grades with a small load (2000 lb. tent trailer + stuff). This is in ambeint temps over 105 in the Arizona summer. Very rarely has the fan kicked in (set around 190), and only in city driving & up slow, curvy mountain dirt roads.

Basically the fan only kicks in when there isn't enough air passing through the large stacked-plate fins. Well worth the $155!!!

i been thinking about upgrading my cooler since my trailer weighs 5500 loaded. On July 4th it was 100 in the desert here is socal, and my engine temp guage never moved. I am scared on putting a temp guage since i dont want to know the temp of the tranny,

That's right, the engine temp never seems to move - it's great! No so for the tranny!!

where did you install the sending unit for the tranny temp guage?
In the pan, due to an issue with this particular sensor's length. Otherwise, I wanted to put it in the tranny output where it's the hottest. (However, the great debate on the best place for the sensor continues to this very minute I'm sure!)

Terry great job! Nice to see that you went the extra yard to protect the tranny. I am curious however, does the ATF leave the tranny and enter the tranny cooler and then enter the Radiator? Or is it the other way around? BTW where are the Revo's?

The Revos be on the 'runner! The fluid goes from the tranny to the radiator, then to the cooler. I'm told this actually serves the added function of getting the fluid up to a good operating temp, by going thru the radiator 1st. But then as the radiator gets hot, it needs the added cooler to bring it down. Who knows!!?? All I know is it seems to be seeing decent temps now!
