installed used transmission in 4runner and having problems

drove 90 miles to purchase a used a340f for a 99 4runner(after 6/99/). it came out of a 2000 with 128,000 miles. decent price at 250.00. they had a sign posted charging 150.00 to restock engines and transmissions. i will not return for 100.00.
anyway after installing it now if i put in reverse it still goes forward. put in drive and it takes off fine shifts to second with ease. when time to shift to third it drops back to first. also i have no neutral it still wants to go forward. i have tried to find info on what the shift solenoids do.
i think i may have a stuck 1st gear solenoid which would explain going forward in neutral. the 2nd gear solenoid works which sends it to 2nd. when time to shift to 3rd the 2nd drops out but the 1st is still stuck so back to 1st gear.
i cannot find anything as to why it goes forward in reverse. anyone with more knowledge know any thing about these transmissions.
i have already called salvage yard but they want computer checked before a full refund

i dont know what tranny shop would charge. i am guessing they would want to do a total rebuild. got estimates on old transmission from 2000.00-2600.00
yes it does need to be in 3rd gen forum. i dont know how to move it. may be the forum moderator will see this and do it for me
 
I would shop around at the Trans. shops, and try to find one who would just try finding the problem without a full rebuild. It might take some shopping around
But unless you want to pull the Trans. out again, and try returning it's about all that is left and you posted the salvage wants something to show it's the Trans. at fault.
I don't think the salvage will give a full refund,thats not how they make money.

had time to look at it today. my old tranny got antifreeze in it when radiator went bad. drained and replaced filter several times. then it got to where it would not shift to 1st on takeoff. replaced the three shift solenoids and that fixed that problem till the clutches finally gave out. thats when i got this used one. in my earlier posts i questioned the shift solenoids so why not take the three i just purchased and put in the tranny i just installed. these solenoids come in different color connectors. my old tranny was a 99 made after 6/99. the replacement tranny is a 2000. according to all i see it should be direct replacement. my old tranny had 2 blue shift solenoids and one black. the 2000 has 2 black and one blue. do the different colors mean one is normally closed and the other normally open? if that is the case then this is not a direct replacement since the computer will be trying to open a valve when in fact it is closing it. does anyone what these colors represent?
i called a couple of tranny shops and of course info is not freely given out. i understand that.
 
decided to check tranny serial numbers. the new(used) one is 00BR08208 and the old one is 98LR22358. deciphering these means one was built in 2000 february. the old one in 1998 november. wow. all the info i see says trannys are different before and after 6/99. i need to find out what these changes were. when i pulled out old tranny it had gasket sealant on transfer case so i knew at least at some point they had been split.(purchased 4runner used 4 yrs ago). of course tranny being built in november by aisin could have been in preparation of 6/99 changeover. sent an e-mail to toyota tech support. hopefull they can help.
 
Did any of the Trans. shops you contacted say,i will check things out for $XXX amount? Give you any type of pricing for anything they might try? Surly one of the shops would be willing to do something for you at a price.
 
Do you have part numbers for the solenoids? You might be able to research them & find schematics that would show how they work & see if they are the same or different.
 
getting to old to pay attention. toyota responded and told me my 4runner was
built in nov 98. went back out,opened door and took a better look at my sticker. its a little scratched up but if i take my time i can tell it says 11/98 instead of 11/99 like i saw first time. if i stop and think about that, in 11/99 they would have been building 2000s.
so yes its all my own fault. i installed wrong transmission.
luckily the pre 6/99 transmission is more plentiful at salvage yards and i picked one up locally. wont have time to swap till mon or tues but it will probably take care of my issues.
