And it's working great. I was actually the first person to install one in a 3rd gen Nav system so it took a little trial and error but the system is $350, and provides video playback on the nav screen, which can work on the go if you ground out the parking break signal.

While I was back there I also installed a speed pulse generator I got from a guy at tundrasolutions.com for $50 so I could input destinations on the fly.

Sounds cool! Can you give us details on the VAIS SL2Vi & speed pulse generator? Is this being used with a 3rd gen nav system still or is it with the newest 5th gen nav? It would be nice if the 5th gens could finally be used to their max potential, instead of that only being while parked in your driveway!

I am very interested in grounding the parking brake wire and the override. any pics or directions of the install?

Would you still have to ground the brake wire even though you can get into the override sreen. In the override screen I'm able to input addresses while driving.

the parking brake wire doesn't have to be grounded to input destinations on the move. The parking break wire needs to be grounded to display video on the move. I'll post pics and details as soon as I get the last piece of gear I need from vais to actually complete the install.

Another question, Chiplee. Are you able to see your whole playlist from your ipod on the nav screen? I saw a demo from an install on youtube where the guy says he's only able to view 117 files max.

I'll have to hold off answering this one since I don't have it installed 100% right now. I will say that I'm certain the vais unit will never display more than 99 tracks in a playlist. the interface for the ipod is like having a CD changer with as many disks as you have playlists in your ipod (up to 12 I think), so it's only a two digit field in the track field. If you have more than 99 tracks in a playlist, then when it gets to 99 it will go back to 1 but that will be track 100. Disk 1 is playlist one and so forth. A long depression of the steering wheel track select rocker switch will select the next playlist on your ipod and the playlist name and track name will display, if you depress the "title button" that will be available if you have the vais installed and setup properly. A short depression of the track select rocker switch will just change tracks. you can put all your songs in one playlist, select it and select random or repeat on the nav screen also, if you like.

The deal is that since they didn't have an application for my vehicle I had to take some ohm readings and move some pin females around on one of the connectors to see what worked, with vais' guidance of course. Well in the process I damaged one of the wires so I'm waiting for a replacement in the mail. When I gets here I'll know. As of right now I can't see track names at all on the nav screen, no play lists, nothing. I'll post full details and pics when I get the part I'm waiting for.

of note, you have to have both the parking brake wire grounded, and the speed pulse generator installed to get the video to work while moving.

The nav gets a speed signal and a parking brake set signal and either one will blank the video feed to the nav screen. I installed the speed pulse generator (spg) with a switch. When I want to input a destination while moving I flip the switch, the buttons raise (cease to be grayed out) and I input my destination. If you leave the switch on, it will be telling the nav computer that your'e going 1mph while you're moving and your position will quickly get screwed up. so flip the switch back to normal. the switch will have to be set to send the 1mph signal at all times to watch ipod video

and vais technology sells the SL2Vi. it'll cost you about $400, assuming you already have a video ipod but to me it was well worth it. I had to opt for a sunroof over the factory dvd and this makes up for it. I have three full video ipods so I won't be running out of entertainment soon. Let me know if anyone has any questions

It looks great!!! So my only concern here is the whole spg set up and putting in a switch.

As the nav is out of the door you can use it on the fly, looking for locations and switching addresses, am I correct in this. So then once you put the spg to allow the iPod to show video on the screen you can no longer use the nav on the move.

How hard was it for you to put the switch in to allow for you to still use the GPS, and what does it look like?

It looks great!!! So my only concern here is the whole spg set up and putting in a switch.

there is a perfect black toggle switch available at radio shack for $3. has to be a SPDT and I suggest crimping connectors on vice soldering for such simple install.

I just cut a hole in one of my black plastic plugs (next to the DASC switch) and screwed the switch into it. looks very stock. I'll take a picture here in a bit. i kinda wish I would have put it up on the dash by my left knee with the AC and center diff lock switches. I have a blank/unused plug there too. I intend to install another switch to the ground wire for the parking brake so I don't have to drive around looking at the parking brake light all the time. if you put a switch on it, you can just flip both switches when you want to watch ipod videos.

yes you can switch addresses and input poi names on the fly. you have full manipulation of the nav as if you were stopped.

wrong. if you want nav, press navi button and use nav. Just flip the switch on the spg so you get accurate speed signal to the nav from the computer. It will be working on GPS only and it's not very good at keeping track of where you are like that.

answered this up top. just dont' rush, and don't cut too much of the reinforcing material out of the center of the plug or it will fit loose in the hole it's blocking off. does that make sense?

Before ANY mods, no, I was not able to access all or very many features of the Nav system while moving. You have to have the SPG installed for that.


HOLD OFF on this mod for right now. I have a VSC TRAC / VSC OFF/ and Check engine light right now and I'm in the process of figuring out what I did. The vais unit did not cause this, but while I was installing the SL2Vi, something I did to the wiring on my SPG made my system throw those codes. I'll report back later today with whatever I find.
