Installing a 2002 4runner 3.4L into a 96 4runner

Awesome tools. I hope to have something like that someday. This thread is inspiration and a little bit of confidence for me as I will be taking this project on hopefully pretty soon here. I am dealing with multiple misfires and on at least one of them the valves are still in spec. Pair that with sucking at the tail pipe and 190k on the clock it seems best to find a lower mile donor instead of pulling the heads and ultimately putting fresh heads on a 190k mile neglected bottom end. Anyhow, thank you for the inspiration and hopefully I'll be able to share my experience with the swap as it will be my first engine swap, and first big time project period.

Matt I just received this 2002 109k mile 3.4 yesterday from them for my project 4runner. $700+$275 for shipping from AZ. to Maryland. Like my tacoma motor that i bought from them 2 years ago this motor is clean. I f you decide on replacing your motor give them a call, shipping would be cheaper for you.

It took years, I'm sure, to acquire your collection! What type of mechanical work does your shop specialize in? It appears you have an incredibly wide range of tools and a significant tool caddy--- can't imagine the working space required!

I've always loved the 60's GM. My first rebuild was in High School, a 62 Acadian (Nova)

Unfortunately, I couldn't afford the gas for College so I had to sell it... $2300 (1981) I thought I did ok then, as I paid $350 for it! .... I'm sure it would be worth a ridiculously obscene amount now!!

As for my 4Runner, I just completed the Tundra brake upgrade before Christmas and it made a huge difference. I took my time acquiring the parts (from wreckers and I rebuilt them-- it was very therapeutic) and I'm looking forward to trying them out next Spring towing my boat. I'm hoping to do the front and rear suspension this Spring, but I've been saying that for 2 yrs!!
Between my 4R and my sons' Mitsubishi Eclipse, I'm satisfying my need to wrench. Once we get his rear suspension done, we'll need to do the front, in the Spring. We probably have a valve seal job as well, as I noticed a little blue puff on startup this Fall...

My neighbor has that same car, color and all. His is a 194 six cyl. if i remember correctly. Next time he has it out i'm gonna snap a pic and post it here.

Wow, awesome! My Acadian was originally Arbor green... pretty much the ugliest colour ever! I did all the body work and all the patching, sanding and taping and had a shop apply 4 coats of "Corvette Blue Metallic". Can't remember the year of the paint. Mine also had a 194 straight 6 with a 2 spd auto. Rebuilt the engine, transmission, suspension and bodywork. I applied a liberal amount of blue fur as well as installing bucket seats out of a 68' GTO!

If I was in the OP's shoes:

I would buy the 2002 wrecked 4Runner and swap into the 1996 4Runner including the electronics and other goodies, then sell the rest by parting them out. there are a lot of goodies in the 2002 that aren't available in the 1996. that way you got yourself an updated model.

I sold the 96 as is to a friend. I then bought this green 00 with a bad starter for $700. I removed the 4 new tires from the green one for my silver one then sold the green one as is for $1500 because i just bought these two 3xlocked 80 series Landcruisers. Stock one is a solid 1 owner but has a blown hg and the built/lifted one is nice but has some rust issues.
