Installing factory Nav in 04 Runner.

Hi,
I just got my 04 Limited a couple months ago and love it. When I bought it, I didn't think I would really want the navigation system, but now I really wish I would have done so.

I've been reading this forum, and see that alot of people have been getting Nav units from oemvalue.com. It looks like the units originally came out of the Camry because its a one piece unit, but the problem with this is that all the backlighting is green instead of amber.

So my first question, is the factory Nav out of a 04 Runner a one piece unit? Or is the brain still mounted in the back somewhere? If it is still a multi piece unit, anyone know why? Seems like Toyota would want to keep them all the same? I really would like to keep the backlighting all the same, and trying to replace a bunch of bulbs in a headunit is a pain.

Currently I have the 10 speaker JBL system with the 6 disc in dash changer built into the head unit. I see that the Nav system does not have the changer feature, so is there a CD or even a DVD changer available for the Nav system? I have read in other forums, that there is suppose to be an option of a changer that mounts in that secret area in the glove box, is that true? I can't seem to find any information about it or any actual pictures of one. I really don't want to lose the changer, and that would be a nice place to have it.

My last question is, I see that when OEMvalue sell the Nav units, they also sell the JBL amp, and the harnesses as a package. What I'm wondering is, if this is the same amp my Runner already has? Since I already have the premium stereo, but just didn't get the Navigation system. It be nice if it is, that will save me some money if I don't need to replace that too, plus save me some time in the install too.

Thanks for all your help
Chris.

does anyone know the answer to any of my questions?

I really want to get a Nav unit, but don't want to purchase things I don't need or already have.

Here are some answers... If you search the forum all the questions are here!

Factory Nav out of 04 4runner as per the service manuals are a two piece unit..

Brain is mounted on the passenger side rear tire area.

The changer just was released for a lexus ES300, which uses the same NAV as the camry... (As per another forum.... I'm looking into it....)

The service manual shows the changer going into the glove box, but I have yet to see one either.

Hi,
thanks for replying, I had search the forum but I thought most of the previous posts were in regards to the 03 4Runner. I was hoping that maybe for 04 they would make it a 1 piece unit. Maybe 05 :) Just don't want green backlighting.

I wonder why the Runner has a 2 piece unit? Is there something better about the 4 Runner unit, that makes it need the brain located somewhere else?

That changer in the glove box will be nice, I hope its a DVD changer, I would like to get the rear entertainment display for my Runner too someday (something else I can't seem to find anywhere)

thanks for your help
Chris.

Has anybody found out how to change the colors yet? What if you could swap the bulbs from your old unit into the one? I am swapping conversations with oemvalue.com right now, Want to make sure everything is going to work. What about the Lexus Gx470 unit, will that one work?

I found something interesting out today.

My friends are shopping for a new car, and they wanted to test drive a camry. Well, the one we were in had the 6 disc changer in it pretty similar to the one I have in the Runner. And guess what!!

The backlighting was the same color as our Runners. So I wonder if the Nav system in the 04 Camry's are that orange color too? If so, then the best thing to do is try and find a Nav out of a 04 Camry.

That will solve all sorts of problems then!!!

anyone know about the amp? Is the amp I have now, the same amp that OEMvalue is selling with their nav units?

Make sure you are looking at the button colors when the headlights are turned on. The screen itself is multi colored. Most of us have the '04 Camry units installed, and the buttons are lit green....Just making sure you we are all on the same page...

The 4Runner unit has a cassette in the HU whereas the Camry unit does not, so the map DVD inserts into the head unit of the Camry version...Therefore, the 4runner version needs to be 2 pieces with the 2nd piece housing the DVD reader for the maps...

Ya it was backlit orange. It was a Camry SE with the indash 6 disc.

but then I just learned in another thread, that the Camry nav doesn't support the 10 speaker system. Which I have, so that kind of sucks a little. I really don't want to lose the surround sound that I have now. I turned off, to see what the difference was, and you can really notice it. GRRR

greg,
How much is OEMValue selling the Solara units for?

Since with this unit we don't need the amp or harnesses, is it any cheaper?
