Installing Gibson exhaust, thoughts, comments.

Gibson exhaust installed, 06 Sp V6.

Just got my Gibson exhaust for my 06 Sport V6 4x2 from Jason at Burtman Ind and waiting to install it. I didn't think about having to need a hacksaw to cut off the old exhaust behind the muffler but there is no way to get leverage on the old bolts behind it, so I've got the battery for the skill saw loading up. Also, where the left bank comes back and starts to go across to the right the pipe is flattened out at that point and to me would appears to be enough to hinder performance. Has anyone here noticed that? Wonder if you could cut out that 6 in section and replace with normal pipe.

I'll update later. The wife has the dig camera in Tenn so I can't get any pics.

Exhaust is on, in all it took me about 2.5 hours, but I'm slow and meticulous in doing anything. I actually had to cut the stock exhaust in two places as once I cut it behind the stock muffler, I would have had to remove the spare tire to get the rest out so I just cut it again and out it came.
Install was simple, and the only real problem was the lock washers they give you to attach to the stock flange were just too small for the bolts. A dremel quickly solved that problem. This install was done myself with no jack, stands, or anything, just laying under the truck in the garage. Everthing went together fine, and once started I tightened the clamps again to ensure no leakage, although, there was only one place that was leaking after initial tightening, and that was right after the muffler.
Sound wise, its impressive. Its a very deep throaty sound and is most noticible at low speeds. Once you step on it, it quiets down noticibly. At 70 mph there is no drone, just a quiet rumble. If there was a drone point with this exhaust it would have to be at 55-60 mph, as that is where it seems to be the loudest at cruising speeds. I'll have to see how it changes while its breaking in.

Overall, I'm very happy with the exhaust and went with the stainless to ensure no corrosion problems. Also, a big thanks out to Jason for getting the exhaust to me so quickly.

I bought a Gibson for a F-250 I used to own after running Borlas on previous vehicles. Fitment was way tougher using the Gibson. Things were OK after installation though.

Good job.

Bill,

I just want to remind you that there is about a 500-1000 mile break in on a exhaust system where the heat cycles on the sound deadning material will evenutally break in and that is really when you can judge what it will sound like.

I know, thats why I noted break in during my post. The Gibson I've got on my 99 Frontier actually got quieter as time went along, so we'll have to see how this one changes. Its impressive right now, and almost sounds more like a V8 than a V6. Fitting on this system was spot on except for the lock washers being slightly too small.

Is cutting the stock exhaust the only way to get it out? I want to keep it in case I want to put it back. I have a 2005 Sport. Are the cat to exhaust connections the same? So the Gibson sound good huh? Bill is there any way you can record your exhaust and send me the soundbyte? Hope it turns out good, as I am planning to get on shortly for my 2005.

Aloha!

Its not the only way to get it out just the easiest. If I had a lift I might have been able to get to the bolts behind the muffer better, but laying on the ground I had no room to get leverage. Also, it would not be a big deal to weld it back up and put it back on. Also, I cut it twice because I was too lazy to remove the spare tire.
Sound wise its really surprising, sounds more like a V8 than a V6, deep rumble not usually assosiated with a V6. I don't really have a good way to record the sound as I've only got a small dig camera, but it can take short vid clips. I'll have to see if I can do that and see if its worth posting. Also, the exhaust connections are the same but u use Gibson's flange bolt kit(just two bolts, lock washer, and washer), instead of the factory two bolts with accompaning springs. I'm sure you will like it.

I've gone on a couple long trips with the Gibson now and little has changed. Sound seems to be the same, loudest around town and up to 45 mph. On the highway the exhaust is great, very little noise, no drone, just a slight rumble you can here in the background. Very happy with it so far.

Just finished putting the Magnaflow on. Yes, the OEM bolts between the tailpipe and muffler are a b***h to get to as you must do them fm the top. Jack the rear end up so the body lifts off the rear axle and it is much easier.

Bob are you saying to lift the truck from the differential? Thanks for all your comments.

He's saying to lift from the frame so that the suspension fully extends. This will give you more room.

Yes. The bottom of the trailer hitch is a good place to put your jack. You'll probably need the hydraulic jack high plus about 4" of wood to get it high enough to be managable.

You can also lift from the axle, put stands under the frame, and release the jack to extend the suspension.

Easy Install!

With a friend it tooks us about an hour to remove the old exhaust (NO CUTTING NEEDED) and to put on the new Gibson. I also did not need a jackstand or lift (My 03 V6 has the 3" lift and 33"s so that helps with clearance).

The stock exhaust unscrews with two bolts at the catback location and right before the rear axle. WD-40 helps a ton when spraying these bolts and the exhaust hangers. Everything comes off easier.

The rear set of bolts are hard to reach. I used a deep socket with extension. Once the hangers are disconnected you just need to twist the exhaust and it comes over the rear axle.

Beautiful setup.

I will post pics soon. I love the growl when you gas it and purr when you cruise. Very understated but burly.

All you really need are 17mm and 14mm sockets and a couple small wrenches of the same size as well as a can of wd-40 for rusty stock bolts and hangers.

Shout out to Jason Burtman. To me, the 270 or whatever for the setup is a really good price compared to what some of you have paid for cat backs!!!

The exhaust is straight out the back, but angled down and a nice chrome tip (removeable- it's slip-on).

Good looking ride!

Any problem rubbing w the 285/70 meats? Hard to tell but looks like you took the splash guards off?

Bob

Yep!

Yep, took the front mud flaps off. Trimmed out some of the inside of the fender well liner. Nothing major. Definitely worth the extra beef!
