Installing OME885 and Toytec Superflex with XREAS

Hi Folks,

I have been looking through different threads and decided to purchase the OME885 and Toytec Superflex coils to lift my 4R. What I didn't consider before making the purchase is whether the Superflex coils will fit around the XREAS shocks. I know the OME895 coils do, so I basically made an idiotic assumption that the Superflex coils had the same inner diameter where the shock sits. Can anyone on here confirm?

Also, since I am trying to preserve the XREAS system right now, what do I need to be concerned about when I change out the coils? I know that I do not want to disconnect any lines going to the shocks. I'm hoping I do not need to when replacing the coils. I am going to do more searching to see if anyone has done a write up on replacing coils with XREAS, but I wanted to get this posted because I would like to get this done today or tomorrow.

i may be going out on a limb here, but i'm pretty sure everyone is going to say you might as well ditch the xreas and get a new shock setup since you're already in there.

Agree..... Might as well get the new ome sport shocks. That way you dont have to take apart susp again later on.

Ditch the X-REAS (from a guy w/ X-REAS in great working condition at 100,000mi). If you're in, go all the way and upgrade those shocks.

Everything will wear out and has a lifetime. The X-REAS system is no different. You can either wait until they fail (leakage) and go through the entire ordeal again, or just take care of it now.

Get rid of the XREA. it is true POS system... you will never regret it. If it was so great, every manufacture would have that crap on.....

those coils may cause the xreas to leak sooner, thats one reason in the past , people used spacers to lift with the xreas.

Coming from someone who really didn't want to lost the x-reas system either: It just makes more sense to ditch it if you can afford shocks now too. It's gonna be hell and a half trying to get those front shock towers rebuilt with the shocks still attached. And if you do disconnect them, even from the right place with the check valves, it's probably going to fail/leak on you eventually. If the damn thing was fixable, I would still have it on my truck.

Of course that's not the information you were asking for lol so in regard to what you wanna know, there are "safe" places to disconnect the shocks so you can put them back on. I would bet you don't even need to disconnect the back ones, just unbolt and tie them up somewhere so they are not hanging from the hydraulic line. Then swap your springs and bolt them right back up.

The fronts are going to be a bit more difficult. If you leave them connected, you'll have to use those cheap two sided spring compressors, which are not meant to compress the springs as much as you are going to need to for 3" of lift (trust me, I've had 3 sets blow up in my face). I would not recommend that route. Seriously. The other option then would be to disconnect the front shocks from the system, BUT I'm pretty sure in order to do that the right way, all 4 wheels must be off the ground and hanging at their fully-extended position. So you'll need 4 jackstands that can hold the truck up high enough for that.

I don't see why the superflex coils wouldn't fit, but I don't know for sure. Hope this helps a little.

Sorry for throwing a question in here, but the knowledge seems to be present so I will ask. From what I have read in this thread and in others, I "think" it is possible to add the 3/1 (or 3/2) spacer lift with my XREAS suspension. Is that right? I know, ditching the XREAS is preferred, but when the extra grand isn't there and my current suspension is riding good, I want to go spacer lift to get rid of my lowered muscle car look! I talked to a shop about putting the spacers in, and they weren't sure how to do the install since it has XREAS. I am trying to contact Toytec to see if they can send me detailed instructions before I make my decision, but I wanted to check with you all for the real answer. So can I do it, and how?

I appreciate all the feedback, especially from Kylebacc. If I had >100,000 miles on my car I would go ahead and replace the XREAS shocks. Being only 40k I just don't see paying to replace something that is not broken... yet. After I get under my car and end up hosing it all up...literally, then I most likely will regret the decision not to have replaced the shocks. :ybrick:

I asked about this on toyota120, someone did it and does not recommend it. IIRC it does not handle well bc the stiffer coils and the xreas don't like eachother.

Yes it's possible, and many people do it or have done it, including myself. Again, kinda sucks if you're trying to do it without disconnecting the x-reas system, but it can be done.

No problem, and I totally understand leaving the x-reas. As I said, I'm a big fan of it. The only reason mine got dumped is because it started leaking.

A suggestion to both of you: Look up how to disconnect the x-reas properly (I'm pretty sure i've seen it discussed a few times on these boards), and do it that way. I wouldn't want to try to do either of those setups with it still connected. Takes a bit more work, but probably worth the hassle, IMO.

Thanks Chaz - It's nice to actually read from the experience of others that have done, or are doing, what I want to do.

Since Jack Frost decided to paint my landscape with snow and freezing temperatures, I was forced into just adding to the profits of my local Toyota dealership and have them install everything for me. I took advantage of their tire sale and got my 4th GY Duratrac for a buck and had them order the tires for me. I went bigger than factory, so I knew I would have to have the lift installed before I got the tires. I ran out of time and good weather to install the coils myself. So, I dropped her off this morning and already have the call that she is ready to be picked up. I am really nervous and excited at the same time.

I had ordered the coils, as well as the transmission drop kit and the sway bar offset, and threw them in the back of the 4R this morning on my way to work. When I dropped of the 4R I was going to ask how much it would be to install the drop kit and offset, but the young guy was making me nervous so I let it go and didn't mention it. Apparently he didn't know what XREAS was and that the rear wheels have coils. :wow: At this point I probably should have left, but I realize the guy you drop your car off with is not the actual mechanic. I had more faith in shop I guess. Anyway, I had the box with the drop kit and offset in the trunk next to the boxes holding the coils. So when I got the call, he told me the coils, transmission drop kit, sway bar offset, and tires were installed and ready to be picked up. When he told me the price, I was actually thankful they saw the box and installed it all. I didn't mind paying extra to get that out of the way.

Now I am just nervous and hope it all ends up well. I'll keep my fingers crossed and find out in a couple more hours.

It looks great I like it. I am also a believer that there is no point in ditching the xreas system if there is nothing wrong with it. Do you have any before/after measurements or overall lift amounts using that kit?
