Installing tie down with rivnut

I want to attach a few tie downs to the cargo area, but I don't want to disassemble the plastic.

Can I use rivnut to attach a D ring directly to the plastic or will the rivet gun break the plastic panel?
I used rivets in the past, but only with metal not plastic.

Any recommendations on how to attach it somewhere else? It's not for heavy duty stuff, more for securing lightweight items like backpacks, folding chairs etc.

You may be better off with a cargo net that attaches to the 4 D rings already in the cargo area. Or, you could use a few bungee cords or ratchet straps if you want to get a bit more pressure. There are 2 lighter weight tie down points in the back of the seats hidden under plastic. I believe they're tie down points for baby seats. Not 100% sure though. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will correct me.

I would steer clear of using anything tied down to only the plastic.

don't use rivnuts, the plastic is not strong enough. I have the following (bolted) tie downs in my cargo area on the sides:

- where the privacy cover slots in, there are two caps there, remove and there are m6 threads there. you can bolt right onto there. nice and sturdy
- down lower on the rear trim there are also two circular covers hiding bolts for the trim pieces. remove the covers, remove the bolts, use longer bolts with a spacer and you can bolt tie downs there
- where the cargo net goes, I removed those top plastic pieces, bolted tie downs there. so you can attach bungees etc there as well

the above will hold medium duty items just fine / keep them from rolling around. a backpack can go on that storage shelf for example and attach to the tie down from the privacy cover. edit: the above are also fully able to be reversed. no drilling etc.

for floor tie downs, there is not much if you are not willing to remove trim pieces. you have the factory tie downs and that's about it. I put a custom wood platform in the back with L tracks so I can tie down there for heavier duty needs like propane tanks, lumber that I don't want to slide around etc
