Insurance Question

Curious on what kind of insurance people got on their rig. Since we're installing all these expensive modifications ie bumpers, sliders, gearing, stereos, wheels, and tires. What kind of insurance coverage do you guys carry? In case of accident or thief. Is the insurance company gonna pay face value? Which is always low blue book. Anybody paying for additional coverage for exact replacement of aftermarket parts? Any insurance guy out there?

Front bumper - $800
Rear tire carrier - $1200
Rims/tires - $1200
Roof rack - $300
and so on..

Example - If you got a rig that's worth $8k in your opinion, and the bank is going to value it at $5k. What are you going to do?

Depending on the insurance company, you can put additional "riders" on your policy. Like you put $5k into your rig, then you pay an additional amount on your premium and they insure that amount of extra value if your truck is damaged or stolen. I have USAA, and my previous car ('96 Integra with a GSR conversion) was only worth like $2k book, but I had the extra roughly $6k of parts and work insured, and when someone backed into me they paid for the car to be repaired to the modified state it was as opposed to only the factory options and parts. Just have to call your provider and check.

Yeah, some insurance company limit $2000 in aftermarket mods. The catch there is you have to declare it from the start. Wondering if I can just pay premium based on the valve only. I'll ask them.

Good question. I should look into this too. Im guessing blue book is like $7k on mine, which is sure as hell not gonna cover it. Hmmm

I know with USAA you do not have to declare it from the start.

I filed a claim several years ago after a front end accident. I showed pictures for my lights, bug shield and pre-runner bar. At the time about $600+ worth of mods. They paid out for the damages by cutting me a check.

Don't you have in military to be member of USAA? I hear the great rates.

Yes I should have mentioned that :ranger:

I am a veteran. You have to a be active duty or a veteran.

The only other way is to be the husband/wife or son/daughter of military.

BTW, their rates are not exactly the lowest but are quite fair and they have a reputation for paying out. USAA is a non-profit member owned corporation.

Good to know you don't have to declare from the start with USAA. Right now I only have liability but I pay right at $200 every six months for anyone wanting to know what their rates are like.

I had about 4,000 in mods and additional insurance with GIECO into a 240sx that was totalled.

When time came to write the check they said they would only cover 10% of the mods on top of the value of the car. WTF was the point of the additional coverage?

Tip: Ask what the payout rate of the "additional" coverage is.

I just keep full coverage on everything I own, and If certain things are not covered like a bumper, most of the time the "factory replacement" will cover about half of what an aftermarket is, if you own your car then just get the money and get the repairs done yourself.

thats how I got my sport hood and winch on my truck, I think I still pocketed over $1,000.

I will second USAA! It is top notch service every time. The best part, they speak English too. Brian is correct with them. If you have pictures/proof they will cover it. I asked about that stuff and they said it is no problem. It is not the cheapest but you never have to worry about them screwing you over when it comes to claims.

When the North-ridge earth quake happened a rep actually came out to my family's home to check on them. They made reservations for a hotel and everything on the spot.

They are worth every penny if you can get them.

Agree x2

I carry a full converge policy with Allstate, and when my Scion xB was totaled they paid out big on it. They gave me full replacement value on all the aftermarket part. I provided receipts for what I had, wheels, and a couple performance parts, then just gave them a list of items on the car, they Googled to the parts to find their cost, then cut me a check. Ended up getting about 12K for a car that was worth maybe 5. Worth my payments and then some.

Good positive story. My problem is no receipts.. lol. All my deals was cash and on Craigslist. Most insurance companies wanna stiff you when filing a claim. I don't want their money, I just want them to replace everything as it were before it was stolen or wrecked. The cost of replacing the parts will be high. Example set of 5 km2 tires craigslist $500 only 3000 miles on them. Replacement will be over $1200. Front bumper, they are not going to look for a used ARB bumper for $350.

I have Liberty Mutual, for 2 late model vehicle and the 4runner I pay about $1300 year for full coverage. I was I just emailed my rep and asked him. Lets see what he says.

Hahaha Just emailed me back.. I might have to go back to Wawanesa.

I have to run to a Life Appointment right now, so call into my service team at 949-863-1567. They will be able to make the changes and answer your questions right away.

USAA is amazing. I am lucky enough to have them being 18, and I will NEVER leave them.
