Intake, Exhaust, Y-Pipe

I'm looking to upgrade my intake, exhaust and Y-pipe on my 2017 TRD ORP. I'm finding mixed results and would appreciate any direction someone can give me, either by experience or literature.

What intakes are compatible with the ARB Snorkel?

What Hi-Tuck catback exhaust options exist that don't require a spare tire relocate? Only one I've located thus far is the AFE in this link, and I'm unsure if that requires a spare tire relocate.

https://afepower.com/afe-power-49-4...k-409-stainless-steel-cat-back-exhaust-system

I was originally wanting to go URD or Borla, but I have a feeling I'll beat the crap out of anything that sticks that far back and under the rear bumper. Any suggestions other than the AFE? Also, trying not to sound like the most obnoxious thing on earth while getting some okay to good performance upgrade.

Lastly, I'm finding conflicting results on the URD Y-Pipe and it's compatibility with a 2017 TRD ORP. Can anyone tell me that their 2003+ Y-Pipe will fit the 2017 TRD ORP just fine? From what I'm reading on the board, it shouldn't be a problem

Thanks in advance!

TRD intake works fine w ARB Safari Snorkel. URD Y pipe into a Magnaflow 12536 w 2.5" custom exhaust out from the muffler. It sounds good and seems to have more low end torque, cant prove that, but Im happy with it. Agree with clearance on tail pipe, flattened mine when I misjudged a ledge, and had to cut it back. That's all I got. Good luck!

Yeah, I'm really wanting a hi-tuck exhaust for that reason. Good info on the TRD CAI Intake. I'm also looking at others, but not sure what's compatible. Did you ever find anything else?

Did you have any problems cutting it back, and how low does it hang when cut back?

Y pipe will fit all years. Don't expect significant gains from any of it. Y-pipe is the only thing that has a chance of making a difference really and it is just a small gain.

The thing you can't install on 2013+ is long tube headers as there is no option to simulate the rear 02s with air injection. Completely eliminating the cats and doing the long tubes + Y pipe might actually make a pretty good bump in power, but not worth the lack of emissions IMHO.

I never looked at any other intake, but I think that if a cai is designed to use the factory inlet hole thru the inner fenderwell, it will work with the snorkel. The rubber flange included w the snorkel, fits thru the fender well. Maybe someone has fitment info on other CAIs w the Safari.

Yea cutting the exhaust is a bit of a pia. Had to use an angle grinder. I cut it back to where the pipe was fully round again. The rear hanger was still in place, so it's still up high enough it doesn't cause any issues. Fumes still flow right in the back window so there is that to consider.

Also agree w wfo9 no real bragging rights on power gains. A lot to spend for the small gains you get. I actually copied this gentleman TheWraith w this set up. He has dyno numbers. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/190157-build-thread-my-rocky.html

It sure ain't like when I was a kid and the cheap HP days with a domestic small block V8. Apples to Oranges as the saying goes.

I'm definitely aware that the gains aren't significant. I am looking for a small gain in gas mileage and okay performance gain. It's not going to be life changing, but it's been something I've been wanting to do for a while now. Any suggestions regarding hi-tuck exhausts or other intakes?

Just got off the phone with Gadget from URD. He mentioned that the Snorkel is basically a choke point for the intake and a TRD CAI along with the snorkel isn't going to provide anything anymore. *sigh*.

Maybe it's just time for an exhaust and y-pipe plus URD MAF?

A URD y pipe, MAF and TRD intake will help, but don't expect miracles.

With 285 tires and rear steel bumper my truck feels back to stock performance wise.

People keep saying that. I honestly don't know what my truck felt like stock. I bought and drove it over to get all the mods and bigger tires back to back haha.

After talking with URD, it appears I can just hack the back part of the Mk3 hi-tuck exhaust, but I may go with the AFE. Y-Pipe is confirmed. URD MAF is confirmed.

I'm now just on the fence about the TRD CAI, since I'm now hearing that the snorkel is the choke point and not the intake anymore. Any thoughts on that? @wfo9

Y-pipe - ensure you have replacement nuts and studs for the OEM manifolds, most of us who've done it had issues with them. There's also the gasket between the y-pipe and mid-pipe which is not included in the URD kit (even if you add the associated gaskets).

MAF Calibrator, especially when mapped with an appropriate intake will lean the engine out some improving MPG. I've had the aFe Momentum intake installed for about 2kmi now, added the MAF calibrator after the first 200-300mi and saw ~1.5-2mpg gain with the calibrator installed.

I've emailed with Gadget quite a bit recently before jumping on the URD-Whipple supercharger. Included with the SC is the UCON-EMS that gets plugged in between the ECU and main harness. I've been told it will allow for LT headers and a no-cat install if you're after that route. Currently he doesn't show any availability for the UCON-EMS standalone but it is listed on his site.

I can't speak for the snorkel, however, assume it would be more difficult/work to draw a large vacuum through a long tube than it would be a short one.

That sounds great. The only reason I went snorkel was because of the McQueen fenders. They do not have a lining inside once the fenders are installed, and therefore, mud and all sorts of stuff gets thrown into the exposed intake when off road. The snorkel was an obvious choice for me for that reason.

Gadget did recommend leaving the stock intake now and just adding the MAF, which would help.

I have the TRD Intake + URD Y-pipe. Still waiting for the MAF since theyre currently backordered. I on 285/70/17 stock trail wheels (30 lbs (+/-).

I live in Los Angeles and drive mostly freeways/highways (80% traffic lol). with just the intake and the larger tires I avged between 16-17 mpg. when I installed the Y-pipe my mpg is still 16-17.5. my driving habits are still the same. you do get a little more oomph with the y-pipe. i was testing it out and after i killed that tank i just went back to my normal driving habits because this is not a race car lol. hopefully once the MAF is installed it'll bring it all together and hopefully i'll gain the 1.5-2 mpg stated above.

I drive slow. 60-65mph. sometimes 70 if i have to. but im sure its because the stop and go traffic that kills my mpg. i havent gone on a long dist trip yet but i'm sure ill see better results?

good luck! I like the y-pipe fyi. i shouldve bought it a long time ago.

sorry failed to mention my 4R: 2017 TRD ORP.

get a superchargeR! im thinking about it next year. neeeed moooarrrr powerrr!!!! but doesnt matter because i drive slow. . i hate LA. lol

Speaking of exhaust, I did notice a surprising gain from changing stock muffler to aftermarket. After carrying it off the truck I knew why.. weighs like a big of bricks!

Got tired of drone and went back to something quiet in the end though.

Supercharger requires premium gas all the time! :( I like the current power profile, but I want the MPG, and a little extra power doesn't hurt. The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm thinking about going with the AFE hi-tuck. I'll get the intake just because! I can't imagine the airflow being that much more restrictive on the snorkel than normal... right? Maybe I'll get a small computer fan to push air :P hahah. Y-Pipe is definitely going on! I hear nothing but good things. Now, I'm just waiting on whether or not I'm buying an intake for now reason!

interesting. I have long tubes on my FJ i wanted to swap to the runner but didn't since he didn't have a fix for the check engine light. So now i can get his s/c and use the long tubes?

Sure can!
But, if you're swapping the LT over, pay attention to the air injection system it requires a flange on the header. I don't remember what year the FJ started it, but the 4Runner has it (I think 13+).
