intake for a 98 sr5?

yes, i know everyone loves the injens, k&ns, etc but what about the ones on ebay?

has anyone bought one like this or know anything about it? my friend bought a generic intake from ebay for his blazer and he says it has more than paid for itself (even though its only like 40 bucks) in gass milage increases. It also adds a more throaty sound, granted he also has an upgraded exhaust. I was just wondering if anyone has more information about these generic intakes. I want to get a new intake and not paying $200+ would be great. ALso, i've looked at a bunch of different intakes and the generic ones on ebay seem to have a different tubing design than the higher end ones. and what is the rectangular hole on the side for? i havent seen those on the injens and k&ns, anyone know? also, why are some intakes for the the 99-02 3.4 v6s and others for the 95-99 3.4 v6s? it seems there is an overlap, 2 types work for the 99s, why would the 99+ intakes not fit on the 98?

If it uses the under hood air, I'd stay away. You really want to use the colder outside air, and the only way to get that is to use the intake that comes from the fender. You're probably better off modifying the original one instead. Check out 4x4 wire web site for info.

well it seems to me that it would place the filter in the same position that the k&ns would but the elbow portion is closer to the filter rather than at the throtle body, to me the only difference seems to be appearance of the tubing and the heat shield, as a result i would buy a heat shield, they cost like 5 bucks off ebay, i was just wondering if anyone knew if they were actually worth the 50 bucks and/or how much better can the $200+ intakes be? i could drop a k&n filter in place of the generic one that comes with it.

The K+N filter, and I'm sure any style filter like it, has been dyno proven to lose horsepower when used with the supercharger because of the increased intake air temp. I would imagine it would be similar on a NA engine. Check gadgets web site for info.
