Interested in an '01 SR5, any help would be great!

Hi All,

I am new here and to 4runners, but not new to 4 wheelin, or autos in general. I just wanted get your opinion on a 2001 SR5 and if high mileage is something to be concerned about for the price the dealer is asking.

Specs:

Mileage: 109,249

Color: Black ext. Tan int.

It's a good looking machine, from the pics (worn out steering wheel though). But, a bit timid of the mileage and the price might be a tad high $12,995. When I go to test drive it, I'll be looking for the usual places for rust, and wear as well as ask about its history.

If there is anything else you think I should ask, or think about, please let me know!

About a month ago I bought an '01 SR5 with 71k miles on it for $9500.

However, it has some peeling paint on one of the doors as it (the door) must have been repainted. I'm sure that if it weren't for this paint issue it would have cost a few k's more.

For yours - I dont think the mileage is too bad for the year, but I think you could do a little better on price. If you could get them down a grand or more, it seems it would be a good deal.

yeah, that mileage isn't too bad for an '01 (I've seen lower and higher), but def get the price lower or look somewhere else.

high mileage shouldn't be a problem. i have 115k on mine and other than routine maintenance there have been no problems. i'd try to talk them down in price though.

The customer service where the 4R was being sold was terrible, and detered my decision to buy from them.

I am however, going to test drive a 2000 with 84k. They are asking 11,500. I am going to talk them to 11k. I do have a trade in that should help offset the price a bit more.

As for when I check out the truck, any pointers to what I should be looking for other than the obvious like rust, maintence done, belts, hoses, tires and brakes?

Glad to hear you have found a more reasonably priced one-

get under the one you are considering-they should be willing to put it on a lift for you-if they hesitate that tells you something right then and there.

Look for signs of off roading-if it has the running boards those will generally show nicks or burrs from scraping along rocks. Look at the bump stops and other bushings/grommets, etc for signs of peeling or other breakage. Examine the shock mounts upper and lower-look for staining down below to indicate previous leakage.

Look at the inside of the rear wheels and look for oily residue or staining-that is a sign the rear axle seals may have leaked or been replaced.

See if they have maintenance records to show you. Pull the VIN number and take it to a YOTA dealer and see what they can decipher from its' service history.

Have a local forum member accompany you to a viewing if possible
and learn from them person to person as well.

This 2000, is a Limited 4x4. My only concern after doing some research is that they are only asking $11,500 for it (were asking $12,500, but dropped the price recently). It makes me wonder what might be wrong it, or they might be hiding something that might go wrong in 5k miles that would need a $3k fix.

I just hope I found a sweet deal, and it's everything I want and more reliable than our government.

Yes I think that price seems a little low for a Limited-and I think dealers in general should know their prices well so I share your concern that this one seems a little low for that low of mileage.

If it's not already at a Yota dealer-tell them you want one to look it over. See if they fall all over themselves to not allow that to take place-that would be a real bad sign.

I am going to guess that it may have a kind of rare "full time 4wd" option/package which I have not heard good things about-but I am a 5 speed kind of guy and do not know the automatics that well at all. That package would cause increased wear on a number of items, and certainly reduced miles per gallon.

Best of luck and as always the more details you can find out about it the better. Ask to see the Carfax report and double check the VIN number against a plate on the vehicle to be sure it is the same ride you are viewing.

I'm in the club

Hi All,

So I bought the 2000 Limited today. Yea, this might have been foolish to buy it within two hours of test driving it, but this truck is nice.

I looked under the truck, and everything appeared alright, and with 80k miles, it drives like it too.

I do notice that the gear shaft kinda moves when the acceleration is pressed, but it could be normal. The 4x4 works when engaged and all the electrical is good too. So the only thing I am slightly worried about is that, is this too good to be true for the price? Time will tell I guess. I just can't believe how well these trucks hold their value.

Anyway, just thought I would share and I am glad to be in the club.

Why the price was lower?

Dent in the corner bumper

Dent/paint chipped below the rear wiper (no rust)

Broken antenna mast (hopefully I can put a fixed mast in)

Headlight has condensation from small hole on the front of the glass (hopefully I can get the glass off, seal the hole and not worry about it again)

Just the purpose of this post, I will include photos of these problems. Maybe someone on here can add their input to possible solutions. Or if they see something from the other pictures. It is a tad rusty underneath, but not terrible. The grease nipples may need some love. Any other items I should do immediately when buying a truck like this?

That is a nice looking ride you got there.

Yes the 4Runner electric antenna can be replaced with a Tacoma fixed mast version-it is a common mod.

Search Tacoma antenna or "fixed mast" and it should get you close....

Another more techy website is YOTATECH and several of us hang out over there as well.

Should be able to find another headlight on ebay I would think....

Yes it is normal for tranny movement while the vehicle is in motion-many folks ask the same question as new owners.
