Interesting facts about bigger tires

This was in the newest JP magazine. Yes a Jeep magazine but the idea is the same. The article states that the general rule of thumb is that every 10 lbs. of tire rotating weight increase equals about 100 lbs. of carried weight in the vehicle. This is for each tire. 100 X 4 = 400 lbs. That is like carrying around 400 lbs. dead weight just by increasing each tire weight 10 lbs. I looked at the Tire Rack site. My stock 265/65/17 Bridgestones weigh 38 lbs. My BFG 265/70/17 all terrains weigh 47 lbs. So that means I am essentially dragging around a slightly less than 400 lbs increase just by the increased weight. That does not even take into account that the tire is 1 inch taller and messes up the gear ratio slightly. Go to bigger sizes and the problem just magnifies itself. This is why you will loose a little power and gas mileage when you install larger tires.
