Interesting info on TPMS!

So I bumped into a man today at the gym who owned an '06 Tacoma. He had a hot set up going on with aftermarket rims. I asked him what he did about the TPMS light in the dash and he told me that he just left the sensors in the stocks in his garage. Apparently (according to him), as long as you park your truck near your stock rims and dont drive too far from them (excess of 40km), the light on the dash will not come on. He told me that he used this method AFTER he had his stocks stored in his home and a buddy told him this trick. Since owning the truck (brand new) the sensors had only come on twice, and both times he was travelling at least 40+km from his home....can anyone verify this?

This is true. I run a set of 20's in the summer without TPMS and keep the stocks in the garage with the TPMS. I don't have any problems iwth the light going off as long as I don't drive to far away. When I do drive far enough, it goes off but when I put the truck in the garage it resets itself.

Likewise, I run snows and store the CT's. The blinking light is not distance but time related. The system has a self check that throws a code (and starts the blinking light to designate a system fault) if it hasn't detected a sensor after a continuous 60 minutes with the key in the "ON" position. The system resets itself once you get near the stored wheels and it detects the sensors again.

so basically what you are saying kmvreter is that as long as I am not driving for more than an hour at a time..the light shouldnt come on?
let's say for example I woke up, drove out to get groceries (with stocks TPMS rims in garage), shut off the car to go in the store..came out again and RESTARTED the car..the light would not send a code until I drive for 60+ minutes? I hope that makes sense...

Yes, that is correct. I've made trips to run errands with multiple retarts but not had the light come on after 1 hour of interrupted run time. I also make frequent highway trips and at first noticed the light come blinking on. So I timed it. Sure enough, it comes on right at 60 minutes.

thats some very useful information, thanks! I do a lot of city driving anyways..and when i do take a road trip it's usually for snowboarding and I would put my stocks back on during the winter anyways. I am assuming the information you obtained about the TPMS is through personal experience? Can you direct me to any more readings on how it works?

Here's the TPMS New Feature guide Toyota put out when they introduced the system in '04 MY.
