Interference ???

For years I have been writing on this board that the 3.4 V6 is a non-interference engine, meaning if the timing belt breaks the vavles will not hit the pistons. I have heard this and read this on various sites.

Anyway, I was checking with with Gates timing belts for a friend who owns another brand and when I checked his car I re-checked the 4Runner. I don't know why I did since I have checked it a hundred times. Well, they now say we have a interference engine. WHAT, I wonder what has changed, but they clearly show the 96 to 02 3.4 V6 as an interference engine. Maybe they just want to sell more belts.

General rule of thumb with Toyota:
Timing belt - non-interference
Timing chain - interference

on the contrary, my 90 celica was interference, i had a belt

hence why I said general rule of thumb.... and yur '90 Celica is a non-interference... Just trust me I do know somethings, I work on Toyotas fur a livin....

so the 3rz is an interference motor? and at what point would one think about replacing the chain? for preventative maint. of course.
