Interior lights "door" ciruit always has 12V

When I bought my '91 4Runner, I noticed the dome lights never came on unless switched to the on position...but...if you switch either the front or back dome light to the "door" mode, they never turn off. I'm wondering why is there always voltage to that circuit (even when all the doors are closed) and where to start testing?

Here's what I know. I have an SR5 with no map light just one dome light above the back seats and one above the tailgate in the back. Each light works fine except for not turning off when in door mode. I checked the connectors and there is always voltage on both leads. The two courtesy lights in the front doors work perfectly. I've checked each door courtesy switch by pushing them in and seeing that the door courtesy lights work normally. I've stared at the wiring diagram and can't figure out what's going on. I don't know what the integration relay is or where it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The circuit runs positive voltage to the door switches, which turn on the light when they ground. Start with disconnecting these switches (they have a spade connector just off the wire) and see if the problem goes away. If it does, get new switches from the dealer, if not, check for shorts.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think it's the door switches (but I will double check them). The reason I think this is because the courtesy lights which are on the two front doors (the red and white ones that illuminate near your feet) operate using the same door switches, and they work properly. My question is how does the "integration relay" operate. I can read wiring diagrams pretty well and have a fair amount of electrical experience but the wiring diagram confuses me by placing the same relay (I16) in two locations of the diagram. But the really weird thing is that the rear interior light behaves the same way (always on) and it does not use the door switches.

I'm starting to think there has been some "custom" work done to these lights...:nono:

remove the lights from the roof and see if the wires have been changed on them.
