Interior Paint Job Fail..

So i had some time on my hands today and decided to paint the interior pieces (the gray ones on the dash) black to match the rest and show less scuffs... I took off all the pieces and layed them out and started spraying even coats of black... My outcome sucked. I have no idea how to get rid of the smears and drips it left.. I did not use a clear coat because my can was empty :dammit::dammit: Any help to get rid of the smears? ( I like the look otherwise!!))

I am planning to do the same project, just have not decided on the color.

As far as the drips and runs you have they should be pretty easy to sand out, just becareful because you are working with plastic material.

I think this stuff is actually a product called boltaron, a type of plastic used in low temp plastic forming. It does hold paint pretty well but it needs properation. I plan to sand all of the pieces lightly using a 3M pad, probably a grey one. Then clean with a plastic prep and paint.

~ So if i remove pieces again and go over them with plastidip in one even coat (maybe 2) It will be smoothe again? Or sand it all then plasti dip?
 
I've done plasti with and without sanding and sanding definitely helped. Also do really light coats. Your pieces shouldnt be completely black after one coat. They should look like you got over spray on them. Then keep applying thin coats. If you still see spots where the color isn't attaching don't stop and just spray that spot. That's how you get drips. Rather keep coating it and eventually it will come out great. I have pics of the difference of sanding and not if you want ill turn on my laptop and post em. Good luck.
 
Alright! i have an extra can of plasti dip layin around.. So correct me if im wrong... Take parts off again.. Sand them (because they are rough atm from drips an ****) Then do think coats of plasti dip? I will be doing this tomorrow most likely.. Also plasti dip on the tan part of glovebox and under steering wheel yes/no? Need opinions before i do so! Also just hooked up a 12 in sub ill post pics tomorrow! :pimp:

Actually you dont have to sand it. You can just apply the plasti-dip over it. Someone else did the exact same thing you did with plasti-dip to the interior not long ago and it didnt turn out so bad. Best part is if you dont like it or mess up you can peel it all of and start again!

BTW did you spray the numbers and letters on your gear shifter? It looks like you did...

patience is key, dont rush painting. make smooth, even strokes with the spray, not fast all over the place. thats how the smudges appear. take your time, itll be worth it in the end haha. :)

yeah if you keep spraying spots that you think got too much to try to get it evenly coated it does nothing but make it worse and, just let it dry and keep going cause i had a couple spots that i thought was going to be drips and it dried perfectly. Just have to have a little patience with plasti dip. best of luck
 
Noobie to this forum but I've had alot of experience in painting interior pieces. I've freshened up the interior plastics in my CRX and old Civic and this is how I did it.
DO NOT use regular spray paint. Go to a Sherwin Williams auto paint store and look for SEM spray paint. This is the only thing I've seen that actually soaks into the plastic. Its not a layer of paint on top of the plastic, it actually changes the color.
It will not scratch off, dries quick, doesn't smell like paint when you're done and takes armorall well.
They have all colors and textures. Flat, Satin, Gloss. Satin works best though
Around here its about $13 a can but well worth it. Do it once, do it right
 
Even coats with spray paint. You can always do more layers. always go edge to edge and don't stop and don't flail the can around all over the piece or you will have uneven-ness. Also, Always shake the can before starting.
 
Okay! Round 2.. i re did it! ...I couldnt get the paint off the shifter so i decided why not make it even -.- Looks pretty good i think! Opinions?
