Intermittent fan motor problems

For the second time in the last few months my fan motor didn't come on when I started my truck. It first happened a few months back when I was headed to my 3rd shift job. I typically had it turned off when going to work but felt it just turn on about 3 minutes after pulling out of my driveway. Then today I did some grocery shopping and mailed a few packages off and all was working fine until I came out of the Post Office and headed home. The fan wasn't working when I first started my truck. I felt cool air coming out of the vents since the A/C was on this time and then again after about 3 minutes from pulling off the fan came back on.

Any ideas?

Sounds like your blower motor is worn out. You will need to replace.

Thats what I'm afraid of....have a diagram?

I read the instrutions for removal but a picture is worth a thousand words, if somebody has one it would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like 3 screws hold it in and you should be able to get to it from under the dashboard on the passenger side...

I would check into the Blower Motor Resistor.

It happened on my friends civic where the AC stopped working. The different blower motor did nothing. The resistor broke and was not letting the fan operate correctly.

I replaced mine on my 4Runner after Low stopped working and it restored all function.

Best of all, it's cheap, and is only 2 or 4 screws. It's located just by the blower motor behind the glovebox.

You are right, if the fan only works in High but the OP said it stopped working. I would imagined that he had tried all the settings on the fan switch thus giving him the conclusion that the blower is not working...

Plus he said that it sometimes comes on after 3 minutes or so. If it was a bad resistor, it would not come back on at all.

Good point. It's a good thing to look into, in the case the blower motor does not fix the problem.

Yeah, I was looking at the resistor in the electrical diagram...good to know its cheap. I guess I'll wait until it happens more frequently or completely goes out to replace it otherwise I won't know if I fixed it or not since it happens so infrequently at the moment.

Singtoe where did you find that fuse box diagram the other day showing the location of the flasher...wish I had one for the fan motor. Can you point me in the right direction?

you might also want to check the switch... ive had this happen to both of y trucks and it was the switch, after a while the contacts can get corroded and have wear and build up on them, if you take the switch apart (be careful, there are some small springs and it needs to all go back exactly how it came apart -duh) and clean it up inside and put it all back together it should work, if that doesnt do the trick then yeah check the resistor and so fourth down the line...

My ac/heater fan won't work in position 1 but does work in other positions. Reading this post it appears I need to find the Blower Motor Resistor - anyone have more detailed instructions or pictures on where it's at?

im pretty sure your problem is the switch not the resistor

yeah you pull out that center dash section cover and its in behind there, i think its like one maybe two short philips screws that hold it in place. its got a plug in in the back and i think there is a small light bulb attached to it as well not positive, its been a few months sense ive been in there

This one sounds like the resister pack. It is located near the blower motor under passenger side of the dash. Easy to get to.
