Intermittent Hesitation 2.7

I have a 2.7, 5 speed, 2000 runner and have a weird hesitation issue that pops up randomly. I got the truck in February of 2015 and about 3 months after it started hesitating. It wasn't happening every time I drove it but when it did it would be in the 2500 - 4000 rpm range when in 2nd or 3rd gear. The next day it would be fine then come back after a few days. Finally would get to the point where it would barely accelerate then finally throw a code. When checking the code it was #1 ignition coil. I replaced the coil and spark plugs and then it went away. about 7 months later it happened again. same issue. replaced the #1 coil again and it went away. The issue came up again this morning and can always go get another coil pack but would rather figure out why this issue keeps coming up. Replacing the coil every 7 months is not something I want to keep doing. Any help would be awesome.

Any CEL's? I had a similar issue and it turned out being a bad TPS (throttle position sensor). Could be a number of things though. Check for codes and be systematic when you're weeding through everything.

Sounds like a typical cheap coil replacement. They fail sometimes out of the box. They cant handle heat and after time they fail. Are you installing OEM toyota coils?

The ones I bought were from O'reily autoparts. I guess i will try the OEM ones and see if it helps.

Im guessing that is your issue. The OEM's are pricey but they can last 300k miles compared to how fast yours are failing.

Do you think it would be an issue if I switched out the one that failed to OEM and keep the others that have not been having an issue?

So you have swapped all the coils? If you have any of the old ones swap them in for the one failing. You should not have a problem changing the bad one either way, but if the others are not OEM they could fail eventually. If that one keeps failing maybe something else is causing them to fail.

I swapped out all the coils about 3 months after getting the truck. When it started again I only swapped out cylinder one coil and that fixed it until now. I have not seen a engine light yet. When I do, I bet it will be the same coil. My friend just reminded me of some oil being at the top of the spark plug. Like some seal around the spark plugs may be failing. maybe this : More Information for BECK/ARNLEY 0361536

You think that would cause the coil to fail early?

The oil should not kill the coil but I could see it causing a misfire if the oil is making it to the top of the plug where the coil connects.

maybe I will replace the seals and see if that helps. The hesitation happened yesterday but hasn't happened since. It always rears it's ugly head at the worst times.

Im about to go threw all the coils on the wifes Ford Expedition. It will stop firing an entire piston but never throws a CEL. Also its so intermittent I cant really test for it. It needs 8 coils and they are $70 each OEM. All the aftermarket and high performance coils have super bad reviews and people are replacing them left and right. These have lasted her almost 200k miles. Im going to buy one OEM coil and just hope I can find the bad one. Doing the plugs on this 5.4L triton is PITA. You have to use 4 different extension combos to get them out and they strip so easily when installing. So I know how you feel right now!!

Dang that is a PITA! Was annoyed with my little 4 banger but now i regret that feeling. Thank you for all your help. You have been really helpful.

Looks like this was the cause. Those gaskets are shot.
