Internal snorkel waterproofing question

k, i did the internal snorkel on my 4runner yesterday, and today it rained an went threw this puddle and it sprayed water everywhere like usual and then the engine was sputtering and the check engine light was on...

So we looked around and stuff and there was a little water in the air box, but it seemed like it didnt come from the intake tube, my question is, where did the water come from?

Did it come from the little drain holes on the bottom of the airbox?
would it be a bad thing to plug those holes?

or did the engine re**** itself because of water on something electrical?

drove it around for a few minutes pulled the negative on the battery to clear the codes, its back to normal now no check engine light.

I wonder... I have a 3rd gen and run through big puddles all the time without problems. How deep can a stock runner acctually go?? Past the axles? Over the top of the tires?? What is considered safe for the car? If we ford past the lower sil of the doors water WILL enter the car correct?? Will that cause any electrical problems? Or will the worst just be wet carpet? I'd like to know before I do anything stupid like running through deep water with my truck at Holister and getting stuck.
 
Im curious to, but i have noticed, water gets in my engine a lot easier with out my front stock bumper. i think that the lower variance did a lot. just a word to the wise, or the stupid. whoever needs it really haha
 
If you are going to be forging deep water that goes anywhere near the top of your axles you better have extensions on your differential breathers otherwise you're going to be doing a lot of lube changes. Water will get in through the stock breather. As far as the snorkel goes, the whole intake should be sealed. That's the point of having a snorkel. So those drain holes would need to be plugged and everything else would need to be totally sealed, depending on how serious you plan on taking it.
 
Yup I've got both breathers extended and for Techno Search snorkel and look at snorkel cost I put some pictures
 
Ok, gotcha. I used to see that kind of thing done on old cruisers and landrovers where it was real easy to cut holes and fit stuff in. Haven't seen it done on 'newer' cars. So in this case, I second kball, get it completely sealed. No need for the drain holes if you're sourcing air from the cabin. Also, I would prefer to use a plastic cement on the joints rather than silicon.
 
Yeah I agree about the cement, I used it on the new pipe but I didn't think it would work on the existing cause it was loose with gaps so that's why I used silicone and also where it entered the cab.
 
i have a stock 02 4x4 and ive ben up to the headlights and havent seen any ill efects. needles to say i was crapping my pants the entire tine with the thought of hydrolocking my engine, but hay when your 16 your alowed some stupididy in daily life

Hew Dew, long time no see... hey man i didn't see anyone actually answer your question about this. My air box has no drain holes in it. in fact i went through a same situation so i unscrewed the top of the box off to where i found some lovely mud and water in the bottom of the box. I just had to stick a rag down there and soak up all the water.So in the long run I don't think you should have a problem pluggin those holes just as long as your swimming with that bad A Runner you got there.
 
what the problem was, or what i was told and what makes sense, is that the water hit the mass air flow sensor and since its a warm sensor it thought that the air tempature dramatically dropped. which resulted in the computer dumping gas in the intake to try and compensate for freezing air...

dont know how true it is but it sure made a lot of sense to me.

Oh wow, its good you didn't fry your MAF. man i was just spraying my engine trying to avoid hitting my air box and some how a drop of water got inside the tube the MAF is in and jacked it all up. But yeah thats a pretty crazy situation with it freaking out like that.
It sounds like you had fun though. Is that out by Strawberry? I do need to get out on some trails again. I just moved up to PG and there is this huge mountain in my back yard with all kinds of trails i just haven't found how to get to them (legally) haha. but yeah man let me know when your goin out again ill see if i can pull away from the busy stuff and live some life again!
 
I used to wheel those foothills in pg all the time in high school! haha its all illegal unfortunatly... forest lake is up american fork canyon. its pretty sweet im not sure if your really familiar with af canyon but its really nice up there, but unfortantly it closes for the winter. im not sure when it exactly closes so you better go up before it does!!

not sure where it came from but if your gonna put a snorkel on it follow through yo lol it wont hurt anything to seal up that air box. as long as the motor can pull air through the snorkel you made your fine. might not hurt to check all your joints and make sure everything is sealed up as much as posible hose clamps everything sylicone is a wonderful thing. as for the electronics, di-electric greese on every connector. they make this stuff called cold shrink wrap its like tape but acts like heat shrink sleaves. never a bad idea to add protection to open wires, connections anything that even looks like it doesnt need to get wet. not sure if yours has coil packs or a distributor but coil packs can collect water down at the sparkplug and cause miss fires fixed by di-electric greese and im pretty sure itll have the same affect on a distributor.

lol you never know, ok i didnt check the dates of the post haha

I was googling this info last week and couldnt find alot about it so i did the mod this weekend and did a write up while i was at it, then went back to everything i found "claiming" to have good info an posted up my work just incase anyone else was interested. alot of the photos from the old threads had been takin down. just tryin to keep the toyota brotherhood alive yo!!!
 
User rickashay posted an excellent internal option. Let me see if I can find it.

The safari snorkel is a little much for me.
