I just bought a 4runner today! WOOOHOOO I am super stoked! So awesome...any way. Its a 97 sr5 keyless entry, pwr windows and locks. I have a question though,(I work at a Lexus and Toyota shop and cannot find info. for this year lol). On newer cars you can customize the door locks to NOT lock when you put it in drive. PLEASE tell me there is a way to get it to where the locks just work when I want them to. THANKS A LOT for any helpful info.

I believe there is a way but most of our 4 Runners lock the doors when you turn the ignition on and unlock when you turn the ignition off. The easy way I "defeat" that feature is to leave my door open when I start the vehicle.

My 97 Limited doesnt lock when I start it/go into drive. Could it be the factory key that has a chip in it that tells the truck to lock when its in the ignition? Because I dont have the original keys.

Welcome!

There is a way to program when/how the doors automatically lock and unlock. Mine don't do anything automatically. One of the techs at your job should be able to get you the programming process from TIS. If not, I'll see if I can get the info for you.

Yeah, I looked in TIS but couldn't find anything on it. Usually I can do it with the hand held Mastertech but it doesn't do 97's. There's only 2 other guys here and they do it the same way. If you could help and look in TIS too I'd appreciate it (guessing your a tech also).

My 2000 does not lock/unlock with the ignition. That would drive me insane.
I am surprised to hear that most do. This thread is the first I have ever heard of such a feature.
