Introduction & Got an 85 and am starting to regret it!

So I convinced myself I needed a 1st gen 4runner (had one when I was younger)...

It was kind of rough but I got excited and bought it on a whim. It's an '85 with sunroof, the SR5 package etc which convinced me to put up with the rough bits. 217k miles, Texas truck.

The first thing I do is go to set the timing. Check the plugs, they look lean as hell so I replace those no worries. Distributor cap and rotor are trashed, no problem. The TPS is bad, so I order a new one $$$. It comes in, I pull the throttle body to install it and strip one of the mounting holes on the intake manifold.

Then it turns out they've given me the wrong TPS and it's the only one they have in their computer (I still haven't figured out the part number conflict, the ones they have in the computer don't allow the throttle to close even when adjusted all the way to one side).

Hoses start tearing and falling apart.

Plastic valves start crumbling.

I find three stripped holes when investigating exhaust manifold leak.

So now, I've got a very questionable vehicle that won't run. The old TPS will let it idle, but now that I've been jacking with it it won't go above idle under load without completely bogging / nothing happening when the pedal is put to the floor (engine doesn't rev). Revs out fine when parked in neutral. I'm guessing that now I have vacuum leaks somewhere in a hose that I can't see or is completely missing.

Set the valves and discover to my relief the timing chain and guides look good.

Then there's the minor electrical stuff inside the car (passenger window switches, rear window can't be opened with the key).

I got this thing thinking I could actually work on it and am finding out that parts are hard to get and expensive and that everything breaks on a 20 year old engine when you start touching it... I guess it's a statement to the durability that it hasn't HAD to be touched up to this point but now basically everything needs to be replaced.

Somebody, anybody tell me this thing is going to come out the other side!! Or at least give me a good story to help explain to the GF why we're taking her car everywhere :bash::D

Your problems sound as bad as mine! I was hoping my ole 23 yr. old jalopy of a car would last me until the end of next October until I could get another new generation 4 Runner. Now, I believe I am starting to get some water seeping into my oil.......aggggghhhhh!

I'll be forced to play my hand a year ahead of time unless I decide to sink another $700 into a gasket or head. Dang it!

Good luck with your 1st generation as it soundls like you are going to have to sink some money into the old beast to bring it up to snuff.

I've found out that the '85 TPS is dependent on the production time of the particular vehicle. Mine was made in August of '84. If you go to any auto part store in my city the TPS that comes up will be for vehicles made during the second batch, which starts something like September of '85. The first production cycle TPS can apparently only be had from the dealer for ~$200...

The 'Runner seems to run just fine with the TPS unplugged, idling just a tad high. Any reasons why I shouldn't run it that way, is it possible I'd do damage to the FI system or the motor itself?

Hey I know it's way over whelming and pissing you off but stick with it. It will be worth it in the end as you obviously love the first gen runners. Just do one thing at a time so you won't go broke and make a a project. Just my 2 cents

For some reason, there's not alot of junkyards in my area that I've found. And the old Toyotas are pretty well picked over..:p

I've completely removed the TPS with no problems.

I've also begun eliminating most vacuum hoses and emissions stuff (in Texas >20yrs = emissions exempt), again with no problems. I did put a new catalytic converter on though.

Still bummed about the stripped exhaust manifold mounting hole. Looks like I'll have to pull the thing off and Helicoil every single hole as a preventative, judging from experiences I've been reading online. Not looking forward to that. If anyone knows of a good write up with pics, share the wealth!

What's up? We met over at Krawltex a month or two ago. I have that gold 84 4runner.

Man, how's it running? The other poster was right about sticking with it. These trucks are gems, but people get rid of them when they have let all of those "little items" go and they just don't want to deal with them.

My other 1st gen, the 89, was like that. It was my back up truck and I left the top off of it for 3 years(it was always under a car port though). When things broke, I only fixed it if I had too. When my girlfriend needed to start driving it, I had to fix everything, but by the time I was done, it was back to perfect(well, close enough).

If you need any help, holler at me. [email protected]

Hey Patrick what's up! It's running good. It's got a random miss at idle that I'm hoping is the leak at the manifold.

Actually just started with the manifold today. I was confused about the 20yr emissions exemption, it's 25... Spent about 4 hours on it today and only managed to get everything off. Tomorrow's the drilling and threading and hopefully putting it back together. Slow going.

When I was under the 'Runner I had another 1st gen owner stop and talk with me, he's a welder and fabs up alot of stuff. Told him to stop by Krawltex & got his business card.

Next up is suspension, then protection. Hopefully good for a while after that, painted the top a few weeks back while I had it off. Going to paint the body which reminds me I need to get those decal pdf's from you at some point! I'll email -

Hey ya dont need to drill........just tap the holes! Make sure you have the right tap and helicoil.....and the right size stud. I just got through doing my manifold last week. Had to remove it twice due to stripped studs. I now have three new studs in new tapped holes. It sealed up fine for the torque specified and was inspected the next day. good luck to ya
