Inverter Recommendations

Hi...I would like to install a 1000W Inverter somewhere in my 2004 4Runner Sport. Does anyone have suggestions as to which unit and where to install it? Thanks!

1000W....wow, thats a killer of an inverter. You know for an inverter of that size you'll have to run atleast 4 guage wire to power it up!

But with that said, I'd suggest going with the Stinger SPI1000 or SPI500. www.stingerelectronics.com to find a dealer.

Thanks for the info. I've decided on the Vector 1000W MAXX (http://www.absolutehome.com/web/catalog/product_detail1.aspx?pid=77473) with the USB port. I took your Stinger suggestion and bought their 4G wiring kit (http://www.cardomain.com/item/STISWKH4). Still haven't decided where to install it.

is the usb just for power (ie to charge ipods etc) or to monitor the inverter with a computer?

thats a hell of an inverter if it can be monitored by a computer....

i was just wondering because we have a battery backup for our computer that has a USB plug so you know when the batterys low, how much charge is left etc.
You never know wih the crazy newfangled electronics these days!

not to degrade the quality of that inverter, but there is no way its 1000 watts with a single 35 amp fuse in it. The SPI500 and SPI1000 don't have it listed on Stingers website as to their fuse rating, but I have an SPI500 and I'll check what the fuse in the side of it is as soon as I find it. I'm thinking it is a 40 amp fuse though, which is about right for its ratings.

Ok, just found it and my 500W inverter has 2 30 amps in the side. So if the one you are looking at produces 100 watts with only a 35 amp fuse, that is a highly efficient inverter.

I believe the USB port is only to power electronics with USB connectors. I'm not sure if you can actually monitor the Inverter through that connection. I'll check it out when it arrives.

To get a continuous 1000 wats from an inverter, you will have to draw at least 70 amps at 14 volts from your electrical system. No way around that!

And if your inverter is not 100% efficient (and it isn't) it will require an even higher amp draw than that, probably close to 80 amps.

I received the inverter today. The installation instructions recommend 2 GA wire to both the + and - terminals. Should be interesting getting it through the grommet on the firewall.

It will be a rare circumstance where I pull the full 1000W if ever so I'm not too worried about the specs. It shows 87% efficiency.
