I may be paranoid, but as cool as that is, that's just asking to get stolen. And furthermore, for you and your truck to end up ass deep in the back of another car.
 
I think it's a great idea, but you lose a lot of function I think it really will depend on how good your At&t service is in the area you will drive. If you have bad service you will rely on your music stored on the device, and having no radio to speak of, you will also not be able to intergrate any services like Sat radio, backup cameras. I use my Iphone as an add on, but it's not ready yet (Ipod, Iphone, Ipad) to step up and run all the various needs you will have driving reliably. If I stream internet radio I constantly lose the internet connection in the same areas where service is sparce. Plus how is it removed to sync with Itunes, because it will have to Apple updates do not stream over the air.

Now in a few years when services can more reliably provide stable internet connectivity, this would :guitar2:

Edit: Hmm the audison can take many more line level inputs, this could be very cool if you intergrate Sat radio in, then you can get sound wherever your are.....hmmm the gears are turning, would it fit in the 4Runner dash?

I doubt that would fit in the t4r, the dash is to narrow. I dont know why the title still says 4runner b/c i changed it. I agree also with the above...Its an invitation to get stolen, its a shame thats how we have to think nowadays.

I remember reading this on autoblog. If it has a voice function then I guess it would be less distracting but I still don't get the need for one of these or at least that size. my friends 5 in screen is enough for the nav and audio stuff.

Only if the majority of the web sites one uses do not use Adobe Flash.

That has been my BIG disappointment with my iPod Touch when web browsing and the reason why the iPad is useless to me. The vast majority of web sites I visit utilize Adobe Flash. Until those web sites spend BIG $$$$ redesigning their sites to support HTML 5 the iPad is useless to view those web sites.

Personally, I do not see Apple ever supporting Adobe Flash. Doing so would undermine their business plan for the iPhone, Touch & iPad (ie providing content via their iTunes Store). After all, why would Apple support Flash so one could watch TV on line for free when they could sell you the episodes of the TV show you like from their iTunes Store?

Back on Topic.... A iPad in a vehicle is interesting. Would never do it myself because of the real world security issues and driving distraction it creates.

Speaking of driving distraction I sat in traffic last night due to a Mercedes Wagon getting an enema from a tractor trailer. Not extremely serious but it left one hell of an impression on the MB. :) At least I was driving the 4Runner and had some good tunes playing while I sat there.
 
Hey, the HP slate is right around the corner. That'll come equiped with flash and a few more of the iPad shortcomings. Plus it's a little smaller. Anyone want to drop $550+ and cut up their dash?
 
Mac Tech Opinion

I'm a Mac Tech, and unfortunately Apple does not have a "Dell CompleteCare" alternative. Dell's with this option can literally be smashed and still replaced, while Apple does not warranty any sort of misuse (which we have to critically rule out before submitting a warranty request). I really do not think this unit will last in a dash setup (I have not looked at the video, but I am assuming it is in the dash?), unless someone can figure out how to fit it into a rubber mold.

Years back, a friend of mine and I tried to integrate Mac Mini's into the centre console, and market that solution. It was a real pain, to integrate all the cabling, and the unit would run close to thermal max most of the time. We tried it in his Corolla, but soon gave up.

What I am planning on doing is to sacrifice my macbook by removing the upper screen assembly, stashing the lower half in the back. I will run the unit on accessory power, which will allow it to run for about 3-hours when I turn off the car (on it's battery). I am planning on using the 500gb drive to store movies, music, etc. I will integrate a 7" LCD into my dash, and extend the factory camera (one on top of the lcd, as all notebooks have), and have it record low res videos of what's ahead (so show where I drive, and when I turn off the car, it will continue recording until the laptop battery loses charge).

A better option these days might be to put a small TV in the dash then connect one of those little Android mini PC's you can buy for $50-$75 to it make it an in-car computer.
Since they can run all the apps from the Play store and play videos from Youtube & Netflix, get email with Gmail, Nav with Google maps, etc. it would make a really smart dash. It looks like they could just be plugged into a little LCD TV and make it into a smart TV that can do everything but make phone calls and they might even be able to do that with Skype. There are some automotive OBDII apps too so it might work with a Bluetooth OBDII adapter to show gauges on the screen. I'm not sure yet if they have Bluetooth capability though.
You don't even need any cables since the PC plugs right into the TV using the HDMI port. I ordered one to try it out but it's going to take a while to get in the post from China. You also need a way to control it and one model comes with a wireless remote/air mouse but it's not the one I wanted. The remote by itself costs $39 but I found one on ebay for $27 that also includes a keyboard. It's funny the remote is bigger than the mini pc! LOL
You'd need a data connection to use Google maps, etc. but most phones now have wi-fi hot spot capability so that shouldn't be a problem.
