iPhone Speedometer

can anyone suggest an iphone car mount for the 4runner?

Since so many change their tire size, does anyone use an iPhone as a speedometer?


Any recommendations?

best buy carries one that craddles the iphone then grips onto the sides. There is another piece that can mount it onto your dash made by bracketron.

Why would you use your iPhone for a speedo other than a gps or your speedo.

And when the tire size changes, your indicated speed will be off, albeit slight, so I was thinking why not use an app that shows current speed or put it in gps mode while driving and charging.]

Basically I just want to have a place to put the phone while I'm driving. Thanks for the recommendations!

The iPhone is a very unreliable speedometer. Have you ever noticed that sometimes when you're moving and watching your GPS that the blue dot stalls and then jets to catch up to where you ended up since it's last blip...that's basically how the speedometer apps work;

No I mean the position is very accurate, but the dot doesn't always move smoothly across the screen, because there's always gaps in the triangulation and it'll always be a little behind and then jet to catch up. I think the app I used was just called "Speedometer" lol...creative

I see what you're saying. When I use the runkeeper app it does that skipping thing.

I think I used gps motion x to test the indicated speed and it seemed to work pretty well but I was on the highway driving at a constant speed.

I think another good use would be to use the iPhone to create a cookie trail when you are exploring uncharted territory, maybe?

I just kind of figured out between the calculator someone posted here and using those school-zone speed reading machines that I'm 3-5kms off. Now I play it by feel.

best way to calculate it is take your-

new tire size / original tire size = difference ratio

difference ration x speedometer speed = actual speed

here's the example on my truck-

33/27 = 1.22

1.22 x 55mph = 67.1mph

wow. That's a huge difference. Precisely why I wouldn't want to continuously calculate my speed

I use a speedometer app on my EVO (android phone). Its very accurate, and is also my GPS. I use it to track mileage on long trips, check elevation, speed, etc. I dont use it all the time in place of my trucks speedometer though.

Which version iPhone are you using. I know the 3rd(3GS) and 4th(4G) gen iPhones have GPS in them where as the first two gens used the triangulation from Cell sites and wifi.

I use one on my Android and it's perfectly accurate with my Garmin. I rarely use it though.
