"As Marineau-Mes explained to me, the camera starts by capturing two image frames at different exposures in one-thirtieth of a second. That information is passed on to the software pipe and the A12’s neural engine, which starts analyzing the images.

Smart HDR doesn’t stop there. “Raw material is captured at 30 fps (that’s a pair every thirtieth of a second), and the fusing happens in a few hundred milliseconds,” Marineau-Mes pointed out.

Inside the A12 chip is the neural engine that analyzes frames not just for exposure but for discrete image elements. It’s identifying facial features and looking for motion. If the system detects motion, it looks for the frame with the sharpest image of the motion and adds it to the image. Similarly, an image with red-eye is not just fixed but replaced with a frame where the eye isn’t red or with the reference eye color from the frame without red-eye.

It takes an incredibly powerful ISP and neural engine backed by an equally powerful GPU and CPU to do all this processing, Marineau-Mes said.

All that heavy lifting starts before you even press the iPhone camera app’s virtual shutter button. Schiller said that what users see on their iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR screens is not dramatically different from the final image.

“You need for that to happen,” said Schiller. “It needs to feel real-time for the user.”

All of these image capture gymnastics extend to video as well, where the same frame-to-frame analysis is happening in real-time to produce video with more details in high and low light.

Video or stills, the end result is a new high-water mark for Apple and, perhaps, smartphone camera photography in general."

Glad to hear it is an improvement over the iPhone 8+ which frankly sucks at HDR.

BTW this piece reads as if Apple is still doing HDR the old way by combining one or more photos (most likely 3) and merging them to lighten up the picture, increase colors etc.

Google's HDR takes 8 photos for every picture every time and merges them to reduce noise. That's a big difference.

I suspect Apple will be doing this soon once they figure it out. I don't believe Google plans exclusive rights or anything. They usually publish a paper for anyone to recreate.

Smart HDR is actually a step ABOVE what Google is doing with Pixel 2/3. See Post #23 above on this page.

Smart HDR takes multiple frames. Firstly, the camera constantly shoots a four-frame buffer, so that there’s zero lag when you hit the shutter.

But in ‘smart HDR’ the camera also shoots ‘interframes’ between those frames at different exposures to help bring out things like highlight details AND also a long exposure to get shadow details.

Rather than then simply combining all of those frames into one shot, the neural engine then chooses the best parts of each photo and merges them together. Hence ‘smart HDR’.

In simple terms, it does everything that Pixel is doing...but adds an extra frame for long exposure on every pic. Pixel is able to control highlights but like every other smartphone, the shadows are dark...actually Google likes to crush the shadows (black, no detail) because it uses lots of contrast.

By taking a long exposure, Smart HDR actually recovers the shadows! Shadows are now full of details. This is something that no one else is able to do on EVERY picture taken.

This is why Smart HDR pics seems "flatter" than others because the highlights are controlled (like Pixel) but the shadows are less dark with more details. There is less contrast vs. competition as a result. The difference is that Smart HDR takes a picture that is very much like what your eye balls see in real life! Your eyes/brain actually does HDR and up until now, no camera system is able to come close to what your eyes see.

The cool thing about Smart HDR and Apple A12 is that when you take a picture, it is instantaneous! There is no spinning shutter button or any lag in processing the HDR picture...like you have with every other smartphone. Apple A12 actually DISPLAYS the HDR picture on your iPhone display BEFORE you push the shutter button!! So, you know what your picture looks like before you take the picture. Apple A12 does the processing of Smart HDR in REAL-TIME as you move your iPhone around the scene. So, when you push the shutter button, it takes the picture immediately without any further processing or wait.

And like pictures, the video in 4k30 also has Smart HDR...and again, Apple A12 is adjusting every pixel in the video frame for Smart HDR in REAL TIME.

Overall, in pictures, it comes down to preference if you prefer Google Pixel 3 or iPhone XS. Pixel 3 has more contrast but sometimes crushes the shadows into blackness. XS pictures are flatter, less contrasty, but has more details in the shadows.

But in Video, XS is far superior to Pixel 3 and pretty much everyone else. It's not even close.

Google does have Night Sight. That is pretty cool and impressive. The only issues are that you have to hold the phone still for 4-6 seconds and moving objects give it fit. Smart HDR does a "shorten" version of Night sight to get the shadow details in every pic. But obviously, Smart HDR long exposure is a lot shorter than Night Sight.

To achieve a similar effect as Smart HDR with tradition camera, photographers have traditionally used the ‘bracketing’ mode on their cameras and then combined the shots together themselves in post-production. While there’s clearly still a place for the precision of human editing, it’s hard to say no to the idea of having a photo editor in your pocket that can not only do one trillion operations per shot (as Apple claims) but also has the smarts to make the right editing decisions. At least most of the time.

But the beauty of all of this is...........it is just the beginning, i have seen gradual improvement in Smart HDR with every software update...12.1 update adds ever so slightly more contrast (without crushing shadow). Because A12 chip is so damn powerful, Smart HDR capability will only get better with time.

Note two things...DxO does not test 4K video (huge minus for XS) and does not test Night Sight (minus for Pixel 3).

But then again, for Pixel 3...it does not even record in 60 FPS at 1080p...or rarely does, and when it does it can change in the MIDDLE of the video!

just got the xs max, I had a 7 plus. what I am seeing so far...
- people can hear me when I call them
- phone size is the same, but there is more useable screen size
- I can read the screen without glasses
- sound is amazing, phone is loud
- zoom is great
- compared side by side with xr, xr is good, slightly smaller, camera is not as good
- it was interesting going from a button to all gestures to say the least

what I am not liking is the size of the cases, yes I get its there to protect me, I have dropped a phone once, the day before my contract was up (alcohol was involved). the case makes the phone 3x the original size.

Try Ringke Air case on Amazon. Nice protection, thin, and clear TPU case. The TPU will yellow over time, but it is cheap enough that you can just get a new one. :)

Just picked up a 256gb XS. So far I like it. Having no home button didn't take as long to transition to as I was thinking. Still getting used to it being bigger. Not sure if the slight size bump is more noticeable or the weight of it.

I do wish they'd make a smaller version of it, but I'm probably in the minority of consumer wants/needs. It just seems with the edge to edge screens these days, that it would be possible. Like the SE but with the screen of an XS.

I am with you on the size. The "regular" sized phones now are bigger than I'd typically want. The "max" sized phones are just gigantic.
 
For me, the XS is the Goldilocks. Perfect screen size/actual size ratio...fit in my jeans/pants pocket.

The camera improvement is huge...enjoy it!

Haven't played around with it too much, but so far impressed. I really never thought they'd be able to cram a decent camera into a phone. Makes me wonder what we'll have in 10 years.
