Ipod in a 3rd gen

First of all, I did a search but couldn't find a clear answer so i'll try it.

How do/Can you install an ipod directly into a factory stereo system without the six disc changer? I've seen some of the interface hookup products but they seem to refer to plugging into the 12 pin connector to the cd changer.

I have an FM transmitter. I'm not, at all, happy with the sound quality. The tape deck adapter thing works good as far as the sound goes but I can't stand all of those wires hanging out all over the place.

I'm looking for a simple and clean way to interface (and charge) my ipod. Any help? Thanks

You've already mentioned the only two ways to do this on a 3rd gen factory system. That's why a lot of us upgrade to a Scion HU, which allows multiple ways to connect an iPod. Not to mention the Scion HUs are also satellite radio ready; you just need to purchase the sat. radio unit seperately.

Hmm. I'm not sure there. I didn't think the factory HUs could control a remote CD changer, but I might be wrong.

My factory HU was a single disk, and I do know that there was an upgrade available at some point on the 3rd gen for a 6-disk changer, but I thought it was in-dash, not remote.

I'm going to go search a bit, and see what I can come up with.

OK, best I could find is that if you have the single disk factory HU (which I think you do), you can't make this work. The HU needs to have a CD changer wiring harness output in the back, and the single disk units don't (still not sure about the 6-disk upgrade though).

Just get a Scion HU and be done with it, because your single disk HU is likely to fail at some point soon anyway. That's why so many 3rd gens are getting the Scion HUs.

you can also pick up a wired FM modulator. Does not transmit audio wireless, instead, has a hardwire connection to the back of your radio (antenna input) and a headphone (or RCA plug depending on the unit you get) that you can put audio into.

Downside, doesn't charge the ipod, or let you control the ipod from the radio, but for something you can get for around $50 it is a good solution.

Plus, its universal..so no matter what radio you ever get, it will still interface with it.

not bad actually...it will sound exactly like when your FM reception is perfect, it isnt CD quality, but its not bad at all..its the same as those AUX input adapters imo.

Only time you have a problem is when the cars radio is messed (tuner is on its way out)
