Ipod screws up my Head Unit

I have a stock head unit so I use the tape player as a hookup for my ipod but when I plug it in all the music only comes out of one speaker. When I switch to radio everything goes back to normal (stereo) does any one know what the problem is here. I used the same tape player in another car without problems. I have an Ipod nano 1st gen.

Never mind guys, I just got back from college and was trying to use the tape adapter and just found out that the adapter was broken while I was away so its not a problem with the head unit. Luckily those adapters only cost $10 at wal mart.
