Iridium & 100k plugs

Just changed my plugs on my 2008 V8 4Runner at the 100,000 mark and pulled the plugs...

Wow. Talk about good condition. Measuing the gap they're all falling in under the .045 range. Almost seemed like a shame to go and replace them. They were 8 of the NGK IFR6A 11's which I replaced with Toyota P/N 90080-91180 SK20R11 Iridium's.

Total time, about 45 minutes. Would have been been done faster except for...

1. Having to remove the air filter box on the passenger side.
2. Needing a 6" extension on the driver side (a 3" -OR- 12" just makes it a PITA) for the one nearest the firewall.

Is it worth going with cheaper plugs? Not to me. The 100k Iridiums were $7/ea, and if I went with $2/ea plugs, I'd be changing them 3.3 times as much (assuming 30k plugs) and it would take me about an hour longer, saving me $3.20.

Don't forget the anti-seize!

If you don't have a torque wrench, tighten down by hand and give it up to a 1/2 turn and that'll get you in the 13 ft/lbs range WITH anti-seize. The bolts on the coil pack thingy were 1/4 turn for the same torque spec WITHOUT anti-seize.

Oh and get one of the $.99 spark plug gap thingies. No need to splurge and get the wire feeler gauge, "fancy type" when a simple cheap one will do. You're not actually using it to set the gap as it's set at the factory, but just to verify "just in case" something very off happened. Yes I do have bunch of thse $6.50 type with wires, feeler gauges, etc, but it's not necessary if you stick to good factory plugs.

I replace the regular dielectrodes every two years before having to smog. Mostly because its cheap and because they like to back out regardless of what torque I use, spec or not.

I have yet to pull them on my recently purchased used 4Runner with about 36k miles but last night after I found one of the OEM NGK IZFR6K11s on my '05 Honda CR-V with 51k miles has a hairline crack in the electrode insulator I've decided that I'm going back to inspecting plugs every 30k miles or so just as a precaution. My CR-V was the first car I've owned that I left the plugs alone for that long. Everything else I've owned either had plugs that needed to be changed more often or I had pulled them to validate the operating conditions of the cylinder for performance tuning, etc. It was probably a fluke manufacturing defect or damage during installation that caused the hairline crack to develop but if the insulator disintegrated inside of the combustion chamber there's a real possibility it could damage the cylinder.

V6's are supposed to be changed every 30k anyway

V8's are good for 120k.

The level of engineering on your CRV engine and the V8 are not even comparable.

Care to elaborate on this statement? The V8 has quite a bit more displacement than the Honda K24 but each has been designed for and it being employed in totally different applications but to make a smiple claim that "The level of engineering on your CRV engine and the V8 are not even comparable." seems pretty shallow. One thing is for sure, the K-block Honda is used in many more diverse applications than than the 2UZ.

Oops, looks like I tripped over one of the forum trolls. My apology!

You continue to make very weak statements that lead me to believe you don't have but a trace of expertise in the area of engineering or even the analytical abilities to make statements about engines.

I do gather that you can read my signature as you state, "You have a civic si". Yes, I have an '08 Si. I've had it for 3 years now and while I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as some of the folks I know that have "written the book" on how to tune the Si's engine, I know just a wee bit more than most. I also still own a '05 CR-V so if you're statement about "You have a civic si" is in reference to me not possibly knowing anything about the CR-V I've got two statements for you: #1: You're wrong #2: The CR-V's K24 variant is rather similar to the Si's K20 variant with the major differences being the design of the head.

Why don't you pull out specific details of the Toyota 100 series development and tell me why it's engineering is specifically superior to Honda's rather than speaking in Fanboi terms like "The v8 was designed for the most over built car on the planet." I love Toyota's trucks, that's why I own one! Honda doesn't build serious trucks like Toyota does which is why I own a 4Runner, not a Pilot. Does that mean that the engineering that goes in to either vehicle is superior to the other? Not necessarily. Give me specific statements that we can compare.

Here's an example I just made up:

I say, "The K24 CR-V tends to show far lower amounts of wear metals per mile even accounting for displacement in used oil analyses than the 2UZ, making the K24 a better engine"

To which you could smartly reply by saying something like, "The 2UZ's that were sampled are used for towing trailers full of K24 CR-Vs uphill at 75 MPH against 90 MPH headwinds when its 105 degrees outside while the K24 oil analyses are from CR-Vs that have been driven across the country at 55mph in October only stopping for fuel."

Appreciate the advice. Thought I could engage in some sort of meaningful exchange with him but your observation leads me to think my time would be better spent figuring out how to milk a chicken.

On topic, the V8 has the following characteristics:

-iron block
-forged iron internals
-no EGR system
-timing belt for perfect timing throughout the life of the belt (chains stretch)
-32 bit top feed Denso injection system

The V8 was built for the Land Cruiser. Toyota's premier vehicle. Its the world standard for reliability, durability, and ability. It has been in production for over 10 years and there have been 0 reported failures.

Sorry, I'm not going to give this thread any more effort because comparing a 4-banger CRV engine, Si engine to the 2UZ-FE is ridiculous.

V-Tec kicked in yet? Ooops not until 8k rpm it appears.

EDIT: Yes Im a huge Hundy fanboy - but that's ok because I own an 04.

No I'm not mad at all. It just seems you like to "stir the pot" on various posts. And I agree about you're opinion on the V-8. I almost bought the v-6 until a great deal showed up on a V-8 and I purchased it. I have researched it thoroughly and believe it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. My gf has the v6 in the same model year (2003) and we both get the same gas mileage.

I decided that discussing this with the other forum member was futile.

I think the other member was locked on "absolute durability" as the only measurement of the total engineering that goes into an engine. I agree that this is one area an engine is to be evaluated. What I think is laughable is that simply because an engine has 4 cylinders vs. 8 or solely because of the expense of the vehicle the engine it available in then said engine in all and every way has to have superior engineering to the point that one engine cannot even be compared in any way to the other. Pretty snobbish, arrogant and totally unfounded. Not what I expected when coming to a form that caters to a somewhat more mature audience platform like the 4Runner. My hope was to get beyond silly banter and have an enjoyable discussion where we nobody stoops to the level that the thread was being brought down to. I'm still up for such a discussion but we've thread-jacked this one enough for now.

Here's a shot of the plug I discovered at 51,000 miles in my CR-V. Denso SKJ20DR-M11, iridium electrode with the platinum ground pad.

I believe the V8 4Runner calls for the Denso SK20R11, correct? These plugs are almost identical, and absolutely the same quality. Both are the same heat range, both are resistor plugs, both have an identical gap. The only meaningful difference is that the reach is different. This plug didn't didn't fail as a result of anything related to the "inferior" engineering of the K-block motor in the CR-V (actually, it didn't fail at all, I found it during my inspection, for all I know it would have made it another 50,000+ miles to when Honda wants you to replace it).

My point is that you may want to consider pulling the plugs at some point prior to 100,000+ miles just to see how things are doing, then coat the threads with a light brushing of anti sieze and, reinstall them and go on your merry way.

I did think of something interesting. This plug would have fired far more times than a comparable 4Runner simply because of the fact that the small-displacement CR-V has to spin more quickly to maintain the designed level of responsiveness. I would expect the CR-V would have fired 20-50% more times over the same distance as either of the 4Runner engines.

IIRC, they are drop ins for the v6 (but do a search to double check!) and they came pregapped at .041 (so if your gap requirement is different...)
