IronPig Offroad

After 2+ years and a lot of money for the SAS, I get a shoddy, overpriced product.

The most recent issue:
2004 4Runner V8 SAS Transmission Hum

Judging by the reply on Mud, this isn't the first time something like this has happened at IronPig Offroad. If what I suspect is true, I believe that IronPig Offroad KNEW of this issue, crossed their fingers hoping it was benign, let it destroy my first tranny, charged me to replace the 2nd tranny, and let me walk out the door with a ticking timebomb.

I told them that the hum was still there prior to leaving the shop last Friday. Lance (the owner) was in the room and did nothing while I voiced my displeasure to his employee. At best, incompetant leadership, at worst, blatant dishonesty...I'm not sure which.

There have been a myriad of other issues, delays and uncaring disregard from the owner for a customer who spent A LOT of money with them. This electrical/transmission issue confirmed I can no longer remain in good will towards IronPig Offroad. I liken it to an abusive relationship...you keep hoping it will get better, "If I do the right thing, surely they will," bzzzt, wrong.

I guess I'm the idiot for actually believing Lance...to paraphrase..."if it's not right, we'll make it right on my dime," was one of the first things he said to me over 2+ years ago(!!) at the start of the SAS. (Remember, Crozhawk and I were supposed to make 2009 CruiseMoab with my truck).

There are nice guys that work there and I'm sorry that it had to come to this...but at this time, I have no reason to trust IronPig Offroad at all.

IronPig Offroad - feel free to prove me wrong and contact me...you fix my issue "on your dime" in one week and I'll refute everything I said.

I've been in touch with Wyatt from RockSolidToys. He and I are working on a plan for the fix. It's nice to know that some fabricators value their customer.

Sorry about your pretty horrible experience man. That is just not right that its taken over 2 years for a 4 month job and it is still not right. I hope they can come up with something to help you because this isn't the best thing for their reputation...

I would have to have an ironclad contract with penalties levied for poor performance and late delivery for my truck to ever go back there.

Yup, I kept expecting them to step up to the plate and do the right thing...if I was an advocate for IPOR, the owner would realize the strategic value of that for the growth of his business.

IronPig Offroad seems more like a car club with a few folks that crank out skid plates and bumpers when they have time. It appears to me, that you have preferred members of this club and their builds take priority over non-preferred paying customers (look back on CruiseMoab and IPOR's Moab trip 2009 forums and wonder why you see Lance's truck there and not mine).

Initially, I was told ~3 months to finish...what I didn't realize is that they were talking about Lance's truck and not mine. Now they also had a few personnel health issues during those 2+ years...but that's their problem, not mine.

Again, I thought that if I'd be a customer who was also a friend, they'd be mine. Now I realize they just took advantage of the situation and have no regard for me whatsoever.

I paid my hard earned money to an American small business during a major economic recession. I'm sure I kept Americans employed and food in American family's mouths. I was their stimulus package. This is the thanks I get.

You reap what you sow.

Did they make your truck enter big gay truckland too? What's the frame/roof height and tire size?

What I find telling most of all, is that nobody has posted counterarguments, excuses, or even just come to IPOR's basic defense. I have to believe that IPOR knows of this thread. Usually I'd expect a couple of "f*ck you, they're the best, I'll kick your ass, you don't know shi*t," type of posts....apparently the writing's on the wall.

I originally went to IPOR for one reason only...Cam's reputation... not, "because it's IPOR." From dealing and wheeling with Cam, I choose to believe his hand's being forced in to this bad situation, not that he himself has fundamentally changed. I could be wrong, but that's my gut instinct.

Just got off the phone with Kevin at Armor Tech Offroad in Lexington, VA. He and Wyatt worked together on the wiring fixes for the late Gen SAS'd trucks that Wyatt and Dave followed to do their rigs correctly the first time. The preliminary plan is to get the truck down there as soon as he has a window in his schedule...which he will solely commit to my truck (hear that IPOR).

Next step, getting the truck down there...

IPOR...here's another chance for a bit of redemption, however so small - offer to trailer my truck to Armor Tech Offroad "on your dime."

I'll be waiting...

I got ripped a new one by my truck buddys for agreeing to this, and I'm not so sure myself, but my truck will go to IPOR *one last time.*

My buddys called me out for acting like a weak battered spouse (they really are great guys though) going back for more. So to continue that analogy, I'm the spouse going back with a camera (so to speak) to document the treatment I receive.

I'll give Lance the opportunity to provide me with a truck with the quality and finish as if it were his. To give him the opportunity to do something that should have been done years ago.

That all being said, here are the ground rules that Lance and I agreed upon.

1. My truck is priority 1 until fixed.
2. Lance will pick up my truck on Monday between around mid-morning at my home.
3. I will provide a punch list of my issues to Lance on Monday
4. Lance will contact Kevin and Wyatt to consult. I will check with both Kevin and Wyatt to ensure they feel that IPOR is following their advice.
5. Lance will personally contact me each work day to provide a status. That status may be *no new status* but nevertheless I will be contacted.
5. I will post a daily IPOR contact log / daily countdown in this thread
6. Lance will personally inspect and test drive my truck prior to contacting me for delivery to make sure it meets his standards...something that he would want a business to provide to him.
7. Lance will personally be present when I pick up my truck. He will make time as I walk through the truck ensuring I am 100% satisfied.

Long and short of all this is that I believe that Lance himself should be contacting all his major customers prior to, during and just post of product delivery and ask, "what did we do right, what did we do wrong, are you happy, if not, what can we do to make it better?"

Just like the attention you provided to me upon intake, We all deserve that same attention upon outlet. It's a start and that one thing what will make IPOR better immediately. That and regularly contacting customers whose projects go beyond a certain aging point. Like I said, I want IPOR to succeed and just because you haven't heard these comments before doesn't mean they aren't there.

The Silent Customer

*I have no association to that link, it's just one that came up when googling "Silent Customer."

Lance picked up the truck in person. He expressed his desire to set things right for me. He imagined most of the work would be done by tonight. There are some missing OEM parts he has to go source, but he estimated no more than 2 or 3 days.

He will have a transmission shop dissassemble the first tranny. If they determine the failure was caused by their work, he will refund my money for that.

Hope they make things right.

Yep.

It's an interesting story, for sure. It's just unfortunate it took two forum threads to get him to realize he needed to do something before his reputation was ruined. Makes you wonder if he's doing it because he knows it's the right thing to do, or if he's doing it because he knows his business will hurt if he doesn't.

Regardless, at least you're getting your 4R fixed.

Update...Wiring harness has been soldered and shrinktubed back to stock config. The hum is still there. After talking to Wyatt and Lance, as I understand it, the shifter swap most probably shorted something in the ECM.

Wyatt is sending a needed speed sensor part to IPOR, which should arrive early next week. Once IPOR configures everything just like Dave's, they will retest. If the hum is still present, they will obtain a replacement ECM and retest again. If the hum is still present after that...

Wyatt did mention that even in that short of time, it could be possible something happened to tranny #2...so they'll cross that bridge if it comes to it.
:sobbing:

Speedo Sensor part arrived. IPOR has sent me some photos of their fit and finish revisions. Things are looking nice. Hopefully the electrical fix is now easily isolated and fixed. Crossing my fingers we're nearing resolution. :)

Truck delivered. Lance trailered it up and we walked through a final inspection together. IPOR had Toyota certify that the new tranny is operating normally (i.e. the hum is normal) and they undid all the previous wiring buttcrimp modifications and then replaced them with spliced/soldered/shrinkwrapped ones (took it back to stock and then only modified what needed to be done...i.e. sans shifter mod). That takes care of any gremlins that may have caused the limp mode episodes. It is an unknown what caused the failure of the first tranny. All the fit and finish work was addressed - Lance inspected and test driven prior to delivery to ensure that. IPOR made a frustrated customer in to a fully satisfied customer.

Relieved to hear that it got resolved! IPOR is local to me (within an hour) so it is good to hear them make it right. I am thinking about going through them for my suspension in a couple months.
