is 20mpg on highway really max?

I leased a 2005 SR5 4x4 with the 4.0L V6. I got 16 to 17 around town and maybe (on a good day) 21 miles per gallon on the highway - with the cruise control set no higher than 65 to 70 mph.
I drove it back and forth from VA to MI three summers in a row and got maybe 19 to 20 on the road, but I was pretty much running 75 mph+ the whole way. The 4Runner is not exactly aerodynamic, but you will do okay if you keep your foot out of it. A good CB radio is your best friend through PA and OH; that's for sure!
I believe the EPA ratings for the '05 model were 17 city and 21 highway - which is not too far off the mark. If you could drive 55 mph all day, you could probably get 22 or even 23; but what fun would that be? Burning some more fuel is worth it if you can get there faster and stay awake. LOL!

shoot, that is really a bummer...
Why in Europe they can have manual option, diesel etc and in US no choice whatsoever???

So far she's leaned herself down to 25mpg on day 1 of my trip...which is pretty good. I love American gas...the rig seems to run better then the Canadian Magic we have.
My 08 SE shows 22.7 on the computer, galons verses miles driven math shows 20-21 mpgs.I'm using cruise control more than I ever have though.The uncomfortable gas pedal angle (floor shape) is getting to me. My right foot and leg were busted up when I was a kid, so it's not all Toyota's fault.This is something you don't find out on a testdrive.I'll end up back in a pickup truck soon, the 06 Tundra I so stupidly sold had both headroom a pedal placement that didn't fire my 'bum-leg' up.

I can get around 22 - 23 on a long trip with cruise speed around 65 or so. It takes a nosedive as I get closer to 70, however.
My around - town numbers are meaningless for comparison, because I live 1 mile from work.
You'll get better mileage if you can avoid ethanol-crippled fuels, I recently found a local brand that doesn't add it, and my in town mileage went up by about 1 MPG.

04 SR5 4WD 6 Cyl. 70/30 hwy/local. 20.4mpg on the dash computer 19.5mpg by my calculator. It's my wife's ride and she's pretty easy on the gas but she uses far more brake than I. So I guess if it was me driving it, could be a little better mpg.
by the way, we live in the 'urbs, she works downtown, so that 70% highway isn't much difference than on surface streets.

:iagree: especially with the 70mph brickwall. I guess it's an aerodynamic problem but 67-68= good gas mileage. 72+, forget it.
I usually drive too fast and then some city driving. Bottom line is 19.x-20.x is my "normal mpg". (That's with a calculator not the mpg readout.)

Depending on a few factors, I can get 223MPG easily around 80....Calculated ny hand...
