Is 93 Octane mean a cleaner engine?

Greetings:

At almost $2 a gallon, I am trying to justify my 93 Octane purchase for my 04 4Runner. I've been told that even though it doesn't bring better performance for the engine; however, it makes the engine burn more efficiently, cleaner e.g. have less impurities and deposit in the valve. Is this true?

Well, I can't answer the cleaner part, but I can answer the performance part.

My wife is the primary driver of our 4Runner, but I drove it yesterday and found that the performance was not near as 'zippy' as normal. When I returned home, I asked her if she thought it was performing normally. Her answer was NO, not since the last tank of gas which was not premium unleaded.

The higher the octane rating, the less volatile the fuel (less prone to detonation) which allows advancing the timing which in turn provides more power.

Many modern cars have knock sensors and will retard the timing if detonation (knocking) is detected. I don't know if this is true in the case of the 4Runner, but it wouldn't surprise me if true since it seems to perform poorly on lower octane fuel.

edit: Our (her) car is a 2003 V-8 4X2 SR5 4Runner.

Bro, "at almost $2/gallon", so it's still under $2, that's freakin' robbery. Here in Cali 89 Octane is at about $2.11, and 93 Octane is around $2.30. It takes me almost $50 to fill my tank up with 93. Yet another reason why this state is so freakin' expensive to live in, but we do have a lot of perks...where else in America can you go surfing one day and snowboard the next? No snowstorms, no tornadoes, no hurricanes, summer heat is dry and not humid, only the occasional earthquakes now and then, and the sporadic encounters with movie stars. Not too shabby if I do say so myself.

we do have a lot of perks...where else in America can you go surfing one day and snowboard the next? Gas is expensive in AZ too. I paid $2.07 for regular unleaded yesterday...I don't get it...AZ has high gas prices, high insurance rates, high vehicle registration costs...DOH!
