Is Amsoil a decent brand?

I just recently bought a 96 4runner and the owner has been using this: AMSOIL - 100% Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil (ATM) (So. California) at 20k intervals. I'm thinking about continuing with this oil. The 4runner runs excellent. Should I use it?

Amsoil is a great brand, and they make really good lubricants. That said, I would never let oil go 20K miles per interval. Even if the oil could take it, the filter can't. If you want to keep using the Amsoil, I'd change it every 8-10K miles at the most. You should also send a sample of oil to Blackstone labs and have them analyze it for you....so you know what you've got with your new truck. If they say the oil looks good with that many miles on it...then I'll be buggered, but I doubt it'll be as good as if it was changed more often.

I'm sending them my oil on my first oil change in my "new to me" 1996 4runner.

Amsoil is one of the best (and most expensive). I use the 10w-30 in my engine too (195K) and I change it every 15K, but I live in the mtns and I put a lot of hard miles on it. Amsoil says w/ their filter, you can go up to 25K or 1 year under normal use and my oil usually still looks good at 15K.. I'm running their synth ATF in my trans too.

Holy crap that's alot miles. I guess if they make a filter that's designed for that interval, then it must work out ok.

I assume that not very many 3.4L V6's use oil when they're in good running order. I'm kind of used to engines that use a quart every 2-3K miles....so after 20K, I'd have added 10 quarts. lol. But I guess if you don't have to add any, you might as well go the interval they say. Especially if a used oil analysis from Blackstone comes back looking good.

Yeah Amsoil has these crazy nanofiber filters that are a big step above normal filters. The OE replacement filter part # for a 3.4 is EA057. There is also an extended filter that can be used and it's even better (it's just a little longer and has more filtering area) but I can't remember the part # off hand.

When you switch to synth, it's normal to consume a little oil within the first oil change and then it stops. Mine consumed about a quart over 6 or 7K right after I switched but now it always reads as full when I go to change it as it did when I put the oil in 15K ago.

The 3.4 isn't known for consuming oil, mine has never consumed more than 1 quart since I've owned it (9 years).
