Is an alarm necessary?

If you are going to put aftermarket stuff especially sound and multimedia system....yeah...you are going to need one. Im getting one myself as soon as I can. Thats the main reason I havent done too much to my runner ....my radios from my old car got stolen several times and they were cheap stereo systems. Cos I dont want nobody to brake into my car an take the stuff that I have worked so hard to get, thats why I want an alarm too.
Now I have put an aftermarket detachable 5.5 " touchscreen unit (its good for the price and it sounds very good Im happy with it)but not the 7" touchscreen flip up that i really wanted...cos I have several friends that had those type of HU and their cars got stolen and they took all the sound and multimedia system and abandoned the car. and that really sucks!...
In my opinion it is neccesary unless where you work they have private parking and if you have indoors or private garage at home or if you live where there is a very minimun percentage of delincuency

sadly viper and clifford are the same company now anyway, so just go w/ the one that has the features you like.

Factory alarms don't really offer any security other than if a door was to get opened.
But more importantly, the best thing to know before you get an alarm is that it is only a deterrent. Don't expect it to save your vehicle from getting broken into. If someone really wants what is in your car, they'll get it.
However, aftermarket alarms offer you the ability to make it a royal pain in the a$$ for someone to get what they want though, and you can make them aware of this before they even start to break into the vehicle. A simple sticker that comes with most alarms is a good sign to most that you've taken some measure to keep them out of your car. Alarms also come with an LED that blinks every few seconds and I would guess most thieves know what that light means. The shock sensor is a vital part of the alarm as well, BUT you don't want to set this so high that its a nuisance. You can do other options too like a glass break sensor, more LEDs, extra sirens, etc... it really is endless.
But remember, no matter what you do it's still only a deterrent.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I'm not sure if I have an alarm or not. I bought my truck used. My key fob doesn't seem like it has anything extra for an alarm. But I think from what tarheel mentioned that having the a shock sensor is a good idea and if I do have an alarm on mine, it doesn't have any shock sensing or glass breakage.

I wonder if you have a stock alarm but just don't have the remote...might be worth checking into. I agree that stock alarms are less effective than aftermarket ones but they are "something".
I had great results with an Autopage alarm that had remote start...lasting for years and was in the first two of my 4Runners.

One thing that alot of people don't realize is that with an alarm system that has remote start, you may actually be making it easier to steal your 4runner. The Toyota ignition key has a chip in it that needs to be present for the car to start. With an alarm that has remote start, you have to take a key (usually the valet key) and permanently affix it under the dash to essentially disbale or bypass the factory anti-theft feature.

Yea very true. I decided to go with a Viper 5901 with remote start and a bypass kit. This is the one without the key. I'm actually not a big fan of alarms since they are more of an annoyance than anything. BUT it may ward off the passing opportunist and the bells and whistles of this particular unit is for more for my conveniences. (actually more for my family because they are the ones who need ice cold air when they get in the truck.)

Another benefit of aftermarket alarms is the fact that you can get a two-way set up. Like the Viper 5901, when the alarm is activated on the truck your key fob will vibrate/beep letting you know the alarm is going off, they work up to a mile away and can be very handy.

How much are you guys paying for the 5901 to be installed? Place I wanna get them is selling them for $650 installed. Good price? The mile radius thing seems pretty nifty.

You can go my route and just buy the Lojack and Viper window clings for your passenger and driver side windows. The blinking light of the factory anti theft will probably make a theif think it is legitimate, and no one wants to mess with Lojack.
