Yeah, but that's 5.8 on the east coast. Sort of like when it snows 2" in Texas. Everything shuts down. People in the NE laugh at us. LOL

I'm one of those Yankees who has been in DFW when there was a minor ice storm. Yup, I was laughing at the 2WD pickups, gathered at the bottom of a small hill in Las Colinas, like moths to a flame. I drove around them in my FWD rental car.

Actually, 5.8 is a pretty decent sized quake considering structures out east aren't built for them.

It is. Of course, during Loma Prieta, I was in the Blume Earthquake Center at Stanford. Which, coincidentally, was perhaps the most dangerous building to be in on campus during an earthquake. It was an unreinforced masonry structure, with a three story open bay at one end, and roof trusses that were poorly connected to the walls. And I was standing next to a glass wall at the time.

I spent the next two days inspecting buildings for earthquake damage.

Yes, a 6.9 close to Boston would kill far more people than Loma Prieta. But the probability of that is low, thank goodness.

I was lucky enough to do the '89 Loma Prieta and the '94 Northridge. Earthquakes of any size get your attention no matter how many youve been thru because you dont know how much bigger they are going to get or how long its gonna last as its happening. Out here we are built for them, so we laugh off a 5.8. But its like when SoCal gets a big rain storm, 4" in a day, and its chaos and NorCal laughs at them. If its not normal and your not ready for it it is a big deal.

:iagree: in the news reports, they reported that folks on west coast are use to it and it's nothing to us. Well, I don't think that sat well Mother Nature adn she reminded us in the Bay Area last night and this morning about earthquakes.
