Is it possible for to overheat without any issues?

My wife got stuck in our 01 with almost 180k auto 4runner. It was 95 degrees, humid as hell, ac on full blast, 2 passengers, one large dog and all of their crap.
All was well last weekend when i drove it for an hour in the heat but with a lot less in it.

Can a vehicle just overheat with those conditions? She was running for about an hour and 20 minutes on mostly flat land but i am sure she was doing 70-80.

4Runners should never overheat. I've been in 100 degree weather, A/C on full blast pulling an Infiniti G20 up a 6% grade 20 mile canyon going 70 MPH and not overheated. My foot was to the floor most of the time. If it does overheat, you can warp/crack heads among other things. Toyota and Honda engines are sensitive to overheating.

No it shouldn't. Something is wrong. These trucks were rated to tow 5000lbs by Toyota, that's a lot more strain than your wife was putting on it.

don't go with what is on the gauge, get a scan tool.

That's what I had thought. AAA is towing it to the house, so hopefully i can mess with it over the weekend. I can always have them tow it to the dealer if needed.

I'll start with codes and the radiator cap. I'll check to make sure nothing is leaking out of the motor and check the oil to make sure it's not milky.

Maybe it's a thermostat or the advance auto radiator that i had purchased for it 4-6 years ago.

ouch. hopefully its not a headgasket.


if its survived 4-6 years, not sure, i feel like advance auto radiators die within the first 6 months or last. no idea though. but sounds like you will be able to figure it out if you have replaced the radiator in the past.

I doubt it's the weight. And to Yukon4runner it's not an assumption. A/C on full blast with 500 pounds in it isn't the reason. It would have overheated without that. Could be as simple as a fan clutch although doubtful if she was at speed without stop and go. Could be thermostat or radiator or just a slow fluid leak you didn't notice

Mine did the same thing over the weekend, over heat going up the 152 to SF on the 101. Had to turn the ac off, after that it was normal again. Never change then radiator or clutch fan. Timing and water pump at 115k

You said you have a scan gauge did your wife by chance see how hot the Water temp got or reached ? I have reached 216F from which I believe is very hot but usually run at 195, Although I have heard that that is operating temp (216) but then again I'm fully armored and whatnot. If the head gasket is fine and everything checks out id go ahead and replace the thermostat with a cooler one and jiggle valve at 6 o'clock (which i desperately need to do).

I would say when new. With age, that number will go down.

Not my rig. Upgraded springs, shocks and brakes, and that engine is as strong as ever. Likewise the 5-speed. So why down?
