Is it worth it?

I'm looking for advice. I stumbled upon a 1990 2 door 4runner SR5, 3.0, 5speed,4x4. I didnt have a lot of time to really inspect it but here is what I can tell you.

222k miles
Clutch is going out
Body is straight, no rust, none underneath.
Tires are old
Interior is blue vinyl in great condition except dash cap which has cracks
Paint is shot
Wasnt able to hear motor run but owner says it ran fine before parked
Possibly has had front driverside fender replaced (didnt see vin tag) frames good
Engine has oil leak (may be seeping head gaskets?)
Glass looked good

I love the idea of a 2 door 4runner, especially since they are less common. But is that uniqueness clouding my judgment? The guy didn't have the vehicle for sale but was open to offers. So my question(s) are-is it worth sinking money into and if so how much? I try to buy vehicles at a price that allows me to get out if needed without losing too much if not any of what I have in it. So what is your opinion of that threshold for this vehicle? I think I could probably get it bought for $1500, am I crazy? If kept and slowly restored, does this have any collectibility?

I consider myself a shade tree mechanic, I've done most repairs short of rebuilding an engine and Im always willing to try a repair once. So most work will first be attempted by me to save money.

I'd say $1500 is a good price and if you can address the clutch and oil leaks yourself, then go get it. It sounds like you don't need this vehicle, you just want it, so make yourself happy! Would you use this for an offroader or a full restoration project?

at that point the 3.0 is a time bomb I would go low as possible under 1k if you can

$1500 for what's essentially a non-running truck seems steep. The two doors are more collectible than most, but the second gen just doesn't the following of the first gen or third gen, you're not going to see the big bump in price that those trucks are getting right now. I think if you're looking to get your money back, $1500 is verging on too much after you factor in all the money and work needed to bring it back. $1000-$1200 might be a little more realistic.

After the much appreciated input here and on another site I decided to pass. I just couldn't justify sinking the money into it. Especially considering the majority of "issues" that would be addressed is just to get it road-worthy. Than I would be sinking even more money into it to modify it. I'll stick with spending the money on my 4th gen.
